Upgrading Dell Vostro 200 Slim - Help with Graphics Card and RAM

My Dad recently emailed me asking to help him upgrade his old Dell Vostro 200 Slim, and I have NO idea where to start. I've been asking around, and was told either a GTX 230, GT 640 or GT 6450 video card would do the trick. As for the RAM, I don't know what I'm looking for, what speed I need (DDR3 or DDR2?), any help at all would be hugely appreciated

Memory Type: DDR2 PC2-6400, DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 4GB
Slots: 4

www.crucial.com for guaranteed compatible memory.

The Vostro 200 Slim only has a 250 watt power supply and you can only use low profile video cards that come with low profile brackets for them to fit.  The Nvidia GT 610, GT 630 or GT 640 should be fine. The AMD HD 6450, HD 6570 or R7 240 should also work.

The GT 610 HERE is a good option without spending a lot of money on an older system.

As for memory:

The Vostro 200 only comes with a 250W power supply, so you will need to be careful which power supply you get ... I'll let others give you possible real-world examples that will work, but it it unlikely that any of those you listed will work in this system.  Also mind the small case of the "slim" ... full size video cards are unlikely to fit.

What about this one? http://www.pp.co.nz/products.php?pp_id=AA30413 We live in NZ, so its quite difficult to find anything that is either local or ships internationally. This one says its a low profile card, would it work? This one here http://www.pp.co.nz/products.php?pp_id=AA30413 is the one we were originally looking at, its a low profile GT 6450.

At first glance, I would say yes ... it doesn't require any additional power, so as long as you aren't powering many other devices (expansion cards, USB devices, multiple drives, high TDP processors, fully-populated memory slots, etc.).

Both your links are for the exact same card which is the HD 6450.  There is no such thing as the GT 6450.  The HD 6450 will work fine as long as it comes with low profile brackets.  It is a low profile card, but you just have to change from the full size bracket attached to a low profile bracket so it fits.  I used the HD 6450 on a Dell slim with a 220 watt power supply for quite some time and never had any problems.  They only use 30 watts at most.

P.S.  If I look on Newegg's site at the same Asus card, it does show that it comes with the low profile brackets so you should be good to go.  You have to remove the 4 cable monitor screws and the small screw in the middle above the HDMI port. You do not have to reconnect the VGA if you don't plan on using it and just use the DVI/HDMI low profile bracket.
