Upgrading RAM on a DELL Dimension 5000 desktop

I would like to upgrade the memory on my DELL Dimension 5000 Desktop.

At the moment I understand there are two 512MB DDR 400MHz chips and two empty slots.

Does anyone know exaxcty what modules I need to order to upgrade to 2GB?

I already have a 512MB modile removed from my old Dimension 4400 - could I use this in the 5000? Is there any way of checking what type of chip it is from the serial number

TIA?

For best performance you need to install memory in pairs.  Thus, to upgrade from the existing 1GB to 2GB you would need two more 512MB modules.

The 5000, according to the Crucial memory site uses DDR2 PC2-5300,DDR2 PC2-6400 memory.  Click Me for the Crucial site listing.

The 4400, according to the Crucial memory site uses  DDR PC2700,DDR PC320

Thus the 4400 memory is not compatible.  As Dell's can have compatibility problems with some non-Dell brands, Crucial is recommended as it is guaranteed to work in Dell's.
