Upgrading graphics card in XPS 720
Hello,
I'm a newbie at this so I need a little help. My GeForce 8800 GTX has died and I'm thinking about upgrading to gtx 580 or gtx 670. But I'm not sure if my motherboard can handle it. I think it should be Dell's Foxconn LS 36. Are those cards (gtx 5xx/6xx series) compatible with this motherboard? PCI-e slot wise, pin wise and all that?
And another thing... is my 750W power supply enough?
I will probably choose gtx 670 and as far as I can tell it should be compatible but I would like someone to have a check just in case I missed something.

I would be more concerned if it worked at all. Remember this is a older system. Not all 3.0 cards work on a 1.0 bus. 2.0 or 2.1 more than likely would work for the card. There are other Dell systems(XPS8300) that has issues running the 670 and 680 cards.
There is more than just the bus. You also have to take into account the processor.
A 570 would more than likely be a better choice as that is only a 2.0 card.

The 580 requires 8 pin connectors which you don't have same for the gtx670. You are better off not going much higher than a GTX470, which is what the last card was i put in my old 720.

if you want about the same power as the 8800 i would go with the new HD 7770 from AMD ... same performance ... less power consumption .... one 6 pin required ... www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx

Actually I would like some performance boost that's why I'm thinking about better cards. And as far as I can tell gtx 670 requires 2x6 pins which I do have. Only some factory overclocked 670 cards require 6 and 8 pin connectors. I learnt something about bus interface which should not cause any trouble with newer cards and PSU should be sufficient. I might get something cheaper than 670 I'm still deciding.
Am I missing something or 2x6 pin connectors and PCI-E x16 interface is basically what I should be looking for? Should I be worried about my PSU or 750W is enough even for newer cards?

The problem is your bus spec I belive the 720 is1.0 so a 670 would be and over kill and you would not reap the full benfiits of the card(cost/performance) if it even would work. That is why i recommened the 470 it work great in my rig.

Not all AMD cards play nice on the Nvidia chipset. You have plenty of power on the 750w supply. It is just a shame that there were no 8 pin connectors on that version. I believe that the 1Kw supply had two 8 pin connectors. But you will be fine with cards that need the 6 pins. The 750w was designed to handle two 8800's in sli. so there are in fact 4 6 pin connectors on the supply

Is it going to be bottlenecked that much? Some people say it's going to be around 10-15% slower than if it was in 3.0 slot. I would like to make my own build in the future and I thought I could start with graphic card as it died yesterday. After all it wouldn't be so bad if I was going to upgrade motherboard and cpu in the future as well would it?

Ok I think I get it. I will go for 2.0 card for now.
Will my PSU be enough for 570? I think it requires a bit more power than some other cards I looked at but I'm not sure.

your supply is plenty. Like i mentioned before your issue is 8 vs 6 pin PCIe connections
