VCOM error

I often get a message when attempting to use the modem of my Dimension 4100 to go online or for other uses. The message reads:
"An error has occured. To Continue: Press Enter to return to windows, or Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart the computer. If you do this you will lose all unsaved information in open applications.

FILE : VCOM(05) + 0000053A ERROR OE : 0028 : C02A903A

Press any key to continue"

Upon rebooting computer, I am able to use the modem to get on the internet or for other purposes. But the error keeps coming back, sometimes after I have been on the internet, other times before I have been on the internet.

This is a tough one. I have had this error in the past but have found the computer is always able to recover normally without problems. Apparently, this is not the case with your system.

You may find some information HERE (but I doubt it).

If that doesn't help, there is another controversial fix. There is a driver file in ME called VMM32.VXD, which contains seven other drivers files, one of which is vcomm.vxd. Extracting and adding this vcomm.vxd file manually has shown to reduce crashes. Extract this file manually from cab 47 and/or 48 into c:\windows\system\vmm32 and c:\windows\system\. I have done this and it has eliminated a blue screen error I occasionally get when streaming WMP video.
