(Version 2.1) Hack to reinstall the Miniview gadgets after reinstalling your OS
This procedure was updated January 11 2008 to reflect a few fixes, which I am unofficially calling VERSION 2.1
I previously posted a procedure to reinstall the XPS MiniView Gadget after reinstalling Vista.
While this did get the gadgets working again, unfortunately the settings could not be changed.
This has been fixed with much pain and research to find all the errant registry keys and
dependencies, which is being written up as this new, revised, and much clearer version 2.

WARNING: The following involves modifying your registry and hidden directories of your system. While it is simple to do I make no warranty that your system won't be bricked. Use at your own risk.
PRE-REQUISITES: You must have the Microsoft Visual C++ SP1 runtime installed on your new OS for the settings panels to work. It is included with many apps such as ATI Catalyst drivers but can also be downloaded from Microsoft at:

RE-INSTALLING THE EASY WAY
Dell does not include the XPS MiniView files on the restore CD or on
their website. If you haven't already wiped your hard-drive, then make a copy of these files (to
CD or USB key of the following), otherwise you can download the files from my server at the links
that follow.
1. C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Windows SideShow
2. C:\Program Files\XPSMiniViewGadget
3. Create a registry file (a text file with a .reg extension) that contains all the settings in the 3 replies to this message below.

Next you simply reinstall your OS. I highly recommend that you do not reformat the recovery partition
as it comes in handy, without it I could never have figured this all out.
Note 1: To run the commands you must have an admin command shell. To open an Administrator
shell you need to go to the Start menu and type 'cmd' in the search bar and wait a second,
then right click 'cmd.exe' and select 'Run as Administrator'. There are other ways to do
this but this is the easiest.
Note 2: You must also access the hidden 'AppData' directory. You can access this either by turning on "Show hidden files and folders" in Explorer under 'Organize-->Folder Options" or by simply navigating to your user folder, clicking the right side of your address bar (blank part), and appending 'appdata' to the directory path.
After you reinstall you OS and log in for the first time, do the following:
1. Install the Microsoft Visual C++ SP1 re-distributable
2. Copy back "C:\Users\(your username)\AppData\Local\Windows SideShow"
3. Copy back "C:\Program Files\XPSMiniViewGadget"
4. Double-click the reg file to import the settings.
5. On your new install, open up a cmd prompt with Admin privileges and go to C:\Program Files\XPSMiniViewGadet; then type XPSMiniViewGadget.exe /regserver
6. On your new install, open up a cmd prompt with Admin privileges and go to C:\Program Files\XPSMiniViewGadet; then type regsvr32 "XPSMiniView Settings.dll"
7. Go to the Windows Sideshow control panel (Start-->Search, type 'sideshow') and uncheck/recheck all the gadgets.
You're done. You can view and configure your gadget as normal.
RE-INSTALLING THE HARD WAY
If you already wiped your drive, but not your recovery partition
(otherwise you need to download the files) and you do not trust the integrity of the files I have
made available on my server, you can easily get them off the recovery partition by using the WIM
filter to open up the factory image and browse it like a folder!
1. Create the folder C:\Wimmount
2. Assuming D: is your recovery partition, copy the folder D:\Tools to C:\Program Files\WIM Tools
3. Go to C:\Program Files\WIM Tools and right-click 'wimfltr.inf' and click 'install' to install
Microsoft's WIM image driver
4. Open a command prompt (you must 'run as Administrator') and go to C:\Program Files\Wim Tools and
type this command:
imagex.exe /mountrw d:\dell\image\factory.wim 1 c:\wimmount
The Dell factory image will now be mounted at c:\wimmount. You can get the files from there, and you
can even load the SOFTWARE registry hive out of it to get the settings there by doing the following:
1. Launch 'regedit'
2. Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and select FILE-->LOAD HIVE
3. Navigate to C:\WIMMOUNT\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG and select 'SOFTWARE'
4. Name the loaded hive OLD_SOFTWARE or something obvious
5. You can now browse the registry settings of your old system and export them to a reg file (you'll
need to edit the paths though from HKLM\OLD_SOFTWARE to HKLM\SOFTWARE).
The registry settings for the reg file are in the following reply (there are a lot).
This was a PITA, hope I saved you all some hassle.
DELL: PLEASE MAKE A DOWNLOADABLE REINSTALLER SO THIS IS NO LONGER NECESSARY!

It would certainly simplify the process. Regsvr32 was one of the first things I tried when I
started this but it failed for me, at first because of UAC and then for some other reason
(possibly because I was mucking with a reg filter). I even resource hacked th the DLL to
verify it had registration info and chalked it up to a Vista thing when it didn't work.
I've updated the steps above to reflect this change, Thanks!
My current hack in progress is changing the backkground image of the device.
Unfortunately this may be all but impossible for a lay person as the data is actually
on the firmware on the display; the only images I have successfully changed are the
background images for XPSMiniView PC Monitor. But since it alpha blends when it creates
the chart it is extremely sensitive to the color channel intensity and range of whatever
image you use. In other words it is a major pain in the .asp, I have mine successfully done
but only try changing my colors to an intense blue shift AND layering it on top of Dell's original background312.jpg with a minimal amount of transparency. I'll see if I can write something up if anyone is interested.

I formatted my drive and reinstalled just as you mentioned in the first post. Everything seems great, with two exceptions.
It might have been this way even from the factory, but is there a way to remove the XPS Miniview listing from the "Safely Remove Hardware" section in the system tray? It's the only item there, and it'd be cool if it wasn't.
This other thing was something I mentioned before, but don't know how to fix. In my Device Manager I still have an item called BT Mini-Receiver that is a driverless item. Any idea what that is? From the Dell Drivers CD, I've installed all the drivers that it said I have except one, the TEAC 19-in-1 driver (CA-200), but I installed the Dell 19-in-1 with Bluetooth (CAB-200) so I shouldn't need the TEAC one, right? Can't for the life of me figure out what that entry is.
Again, you're work here is great, just wish I could fix those two items.

I do not know how to make the MiniView not appear from the Add/Remove hardware dialog. I am sure there is a way to change its device class but it hasn't bothered me enough to make me figure it out, sorry.
Regarding your VT mini-receiver driver, I've commented on the fix in this thread:
