XP does a good job of managing memory. Set it to "System Managed Size".

shesagordie,

Thanks for the tip. Btw, I forgot to ask this question earlier. Is disk fragmentation really dependent on the way the virtual memory is set? Its because I check several websites and they give conflicting opinions. Microsoft site never mention both of them together though. I always use the PC for a very specificic purpose only and not much variations. Thanks.

I cannot see way, in XP when you open the Disk Defragmenter utility, the disk analyser will notify you, if the hard drive requires to be defragmented.

But, I'm certain there will be other opinions about this subject.

Windows XP's disk defragmenter doesn't have the ability to defrage the pageile, the file that is used for virtual memory. "Defraggers" such as Norton Speed Disk, and Diskeeper can defrag the pagefile.

Thanks for the answers. I have read in a tech forum that advice people to set the min page file by a few hundreds MBs more of your Commit Charge peak and max to whatever limit you would like. By doing this, the virtual space has been set and since its much bigger, it won't expand beyond its boundaries, therefore causing less chance for files in the HD to be fragmented...and more likely I will only need to defragment the HD less frequent... which is what I wanted....anyway...we will see.

Then you could use the same very small free utility to defrag the pagefile, as I've been using.

set it according to the amount of ram you have.  Check out www.tweakguides.com and d/l the winxp companion.

if you want to defrag the pagefile all you have to do is disable it then recreate it,  It will then be defraged.  Also Check out diskeeper, it's one of thevery few programs that will actually move your pagefile to the beginning of the drive.  Very useful if you didn't set the pagefile 1st thing after an os install for some reason.  http://www.diskeeper.com/defrag.asp
