Volume randomly going up and down

I have had an ongoing, annoying problem for a few months now. I have an XPS 8100 that has a SB XFI Extreme Sound card in it and the volume will just randomly go up or down  on it's own.

This happens when I am streaming audio, playing CD's etc....Pandora, Youtube whatever. If I go to the mixer, the sliders are not going up down when the volume changes. This is not a case of different recording levels fluctuating.

There are many threads on the internet about this and I have tried everything they suggest to no avail, ie; disabling communication in sound settings, updated all drivers, checked all speaker plugs for dust etc... I have pulled the sound card and reseated it.

I haven't had a chance to see if it happens with headphones yet and I do not have other speakers to try. My next thought is to replace the sound card, but I don't want to spend the money if that isn't it.

Nothing works...does anyone have a fix for this ? Any ideas ?

Thanks

Bill

Hi Bill,

I will be glad to help you. Request you to try following the below steps:

(1) You may use the below link and update BIOS:

http://dell.to/12ZQsnR

(2) Try connecting the speakers on a different system and check if it works normally.

(3) Also you may try connecting a headphone and check if sound works.

Do reply with your answers.

Hi BillNH,

Request you to check if the system service tag showing in BIOS (F2 at startup) and the tag on the bottom of the computer is the same. Also let me know the BIOS version mentioned there. You may try connecting an external speakers and headphones and check if it works. I will then check and see what can be done.

Hi Bill,

I would be able to help you only if you answer the below questions:

(1) If the system service tag matches in BIOS.

(2) You may try connecting an external speaker and headphones to check if it works.

Do reply with your answers.

Kiran,

I looked in F2 upon reboot and the listed service tag is the same tag as the sticker on the back of my PC tower, so yes they are identical. Any thoughts as to why it won't let me upgrade to the newer bios version ?

Hi Bill,

Thank you for following the steps mentioned by me so far. Request you try connecting an external speaker and headphones and check if it works. Only then I can check and see what needs to be done.

hi

I have a DELL XPS 15 9550 and the volume icon appears on the screen randomly and goes up and down.  My BIOS is updated as per Support Assistant.

What is causing this bug ?

Hi guys,

I work as a senior support analyst and I am passing thru the same thing here. The analyst before me has contacted Dell Pro Support and they ended up replacing the motherboard even though it was stated that volume sliding up  problem. The result: the problem persisted even with a new motherboard and a new Windows 7 image. So there is no software (virus, malware, windows) problem. It is hardware. More specifically, the volume up button that is like pressed either in its physically or electronic contact since in this model Latitude E7240, the volume button are apart of the keyboard.

I recently had a similar problem after beginning to use a new headset. Volume would randomly go up and down.  The message box that comes up with plugging an audio device into the audio jack allows for selection of headset/headphones.  I stopped the problem by selecting headphones.  The random nature of the volume control activity reminded me of a floating CMOS input on digital logic.  (Subject to the whims of the electronic charge in the vicinity).  I suspect that the method used to control the up/down volume control on some headset (Like Apple earbuds have +/- on the Microphone) are not present on some headsets, causing the input to float.  I would like to know the equivalent circuit/method used/design requirements to perform the volume controls using the headset input.  The selection box that appears when using an external audio device (headset/headphones) should allow the user to select/deselect external volume control input.
