Vostro 200 slim - supported CPUs

I am considering upgrading the current CPU of a Dell Vostro 200 slim to play with W7 / virtual machines and wouldn't spend more than €150-170.

Current CPU is an Intel Core2Duo E4500 CPU (800 MHz FSB, 2MB L2, 2.2GHz - 11x200).

The motherboard is Dell 0CU409. Bios was upgraded to the latest version (1.0.15).

Device manager reports a G33/G31/P35 Express Chipset.

Am I correct to assume that the motherboard will support ANY Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad (either 65nm or 45nm) including those with 1333 FSB ?

- I am considering Q6600 (65nm) if only 1066MHz supported.

- I am considering E8400-E8600 if 1333MHz/45nm supported.

Bonus questions (:D):

Is DDR3 supported on the motherboard ? What is the max memory supported by the motherboard?

How about RAM memory?  Is there a compatibility list somewhere?  Any special issues?   Thank you .

For memory upgrades, it's better to go to www.crucial.com and use either their Memory Selector, or System Scanner Tool, to find the correct memory for your system, that is certified to be compatible with your Vostro 200 Slim and has a lifetime warranty and free S7H.

Use crucial web site, specify your Vostro model and they'll list you all the adequate memory modules available. I bought my 4Gb RAM upgrade from them. Cheap and quick delivery.

The Dell documentation says the Vostro 200/200S is limited to 4Gb, but that is not fully true. 32bit versions of XP, Vista or 7 are indeed limited to 4Gb, but not the 64bit versions. You can actually go to 8Gb on the Vostro 200.

My Dell 3 year warranty just expired at the end of August, so I'm actuyally thinking of upgrading to Win7 64bit and maybe push the RAM up again.

RV - The crucial site says 32 bit versions only recognize 3 to 3.5Gb.  Do you see all 4Gb?

Crucial is correct, I see 3.5Gb, not the full 4Gb.

Nice tread Guy's...

I am not so lucky due to the fact that i have bought a Q9550 intel core 2 quad processor.
I did a request at the Dutch Dell support desk, and asked which CPU i could use to upgrade my Vostro 200
They guy on the phone noted my request and after 2 day's i got a nice offer, for a Q9550,2.82,12mb

So i tought this is nice upgrade, so i ordered myself this CPU...

Today i recieved this CPU, and what do you think? it did not work. System will not start, only the fans are working.

I also have the recent BIOS 1.0.16 and i tought i had the correct information, but now searching the net, it seems to be that this is total wrong! Is there any option to let this CPU work???

Quad CPU are NOT supported! So, no, there is NO option to let this CPU work in a Vostro 200.

I thought I 've already given all the proof someone may need at least 1 Yr and a half ago !

That's when I've upgraded my system and confirmed.

But there you go:

First of all just to say what an Excellent thread you have produced XFINGER.

Now the buts. I am using the E6550 processor and Bios version 1.0.16 with  W7 Ultimate x64 and the  windows XP mode works perfectly correctly. In system Bios I have selected, Advanced Bios, CPU features features, Virtualization Technology/ Enabled.

Unfortunately I came across your  thread a year or so too late as the memory and processor prices for what is now considered old technology is beyond economical update.

Well, it depends on anybody's definition of "economical" update, but ebay is always a great source of cheap RAM modules & CPU.

Thanks for the reply RV_ABZ. I came back to ammend my post only to find that you have suggested exactly what I've since done.:emotion-11:

E8400 processor  and 2GB modules of DDR2 PC2-6400  DDR2 PC2-6400 are on their way from ebay.

Good thread xfinger.

I was given a slim Vostro 200 and I contemplated what to do with it. Not any longer. Now it serves as my full fledged NAS with mirrored storage pools running Solaris 11 Express.

I bumped up the ram to 8GB total and it all shows in the BIOS and in the OS.

I ordered two of the Mushkin 4GB memory kits and they work brilliantly. http://bit.ly/dHbwkp

Now I just gotta upgrade the CPU (E2140 @ 1.60GHz) and hopefully do some virtualization. Am I reading correctly that by upgrading the CPU to a E6550 that the hardware virtualization features become enabled in BIOS? That would be sweet if true.
