Vostro 420 4GB Memory Limitation

Hi, I'm thinking about buying the Vostro 420. According to the Dell site it says that this desktop can only handle 4GB of memory max. Is this a BIOS limitation and are there plans to increase this to 8GB?  I'm assuming Dell made this limitation because the Vostro 420 does not officially support any X64 64bit Operating Systems.  The intel site says that the G45 Exprss Chipset can handle up to 16GB.  Are there plans to change this limitation via a BIOS upgrade? Thanks.

You are wired. I have a 420 since 6 years. Upgraded to 8GB and run it now as a home server with TB disks in it. 6 years of excellence. No hiccup at all. Just a reminder, W7 is out and it works like a charm on that machine.

What disks are these? I personally think it is not the disk.  Looks more like a memory issue to me.

Hell no I'm not wired my q 5000 works better than this damn thing I had mine for 2 years.  I do not plan on buying windows 7 as of yet. I never used a machine that was as slow and choppy as this one. The sound skips on you tube videos. You can keep yours I'm going back to my Q

I put in a very good graphics card (at that time) and that solved the graphics issue.  The one it came with was worthless.  I had a primary disk which was an ssd and all the rest 7200/xx with 32 or 64 mb buffer. No issue.

That is fine with me. I replaced the video card over the course of 6 years (I guess that is normal) but sound worked just fine. Did you upgrade the driver? Are you running 64bit?

I have checked the memory and I have switched them it made no difference I am going to put 8 GB's when I get the money that should help it.  My nephew just bought a brand new dell lap top with windows 7 in it had it three days and it shut down funny and now it will not start up. I told him to take it back.

Yes all my drivers have been upgraded I was on face book the other day and out of the blue blue screen I updated the bios and it works fine now but the video still skips little bit yet. I still hate this machine It hates games like painkiller the game will work fine for a while then it gets slow and choppy like everything else. It is possible I have a bad hard drive even though I ran every test in the book on it.

I think the Vostro is not a gaming machine unless you boost it up.  I used it for graphics work and that was just fine.  What processor do you have?

Memory issue I would say.  Did you check the memory?  Maybe you should switch it around to see if that helps to.  Had that before.  I boosted the machine to 8GB.  Never had an issue after that.

The duo quad 4 processor. I have had the memory go down to 300KB

I would do that too. Tell you nephew to return the Dell and have it replaced DOA.  I run 6Dells and 3 HP's in my family and there you see what I like more.

Probably Alienware or a good desktop with lots of memory, a good video card and fast disk.  I love the XPS series.
