Weird problem on startup

whenever I start up, i keep getting two messages: one is the "low virtual memory" message and the other says "userinit.exe failed to initialize - Error code 0xc000012d" and won't let me on to the desktop. It also says that it failed to recognize the operating system's license (i use winXP). I have 256 megs of RAM so i don't see why it should have low virtual memory, and this problem just came out of nowhere.

Your first problem might be that while technically windows xp only needs 256 megs of ram to run it, it runs a lot faster with 512.  But even with only 256 you shouldnt be getting the message. Try running msconfig(http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/) and see if thier is anything you can turn off that is running in the background(leave your anti virus software and the microsoft stuff on) Next try defraging your hard drive to see if maybe got a little too fragmented, therfore affecting the virtual memory. Next make sure that your virtural memory is set to 512(2x your memory). You can do this by goint to start->control panel->system-advanced->performance,settings->click on the advanced tab->if you virtual memory is not set to to 512 click change click the custom raido button and set both boxes to 512 then click ok and apply.

If that doesnt fix the problem run your Anti virus and see if it finds anything and also you might want to download adaware or spybot s&d and see if that finds anything.

As far as your xp license not being recognized try running a repair on windows. You can do this by setting your cdrom as the first device to boot and inserting your the xp cd just hit enter when it asks if you want to boot from cd. Once it boots from it hit enter,f8, and then chose the repair option.
