What is the advantage of HyperThreading ??

I was under the impression that Hyper-threading was an important feature to leave enabled ( performance I assume). Yet, when looking into adding a TV tuner card to my DELL 8300, I am being advised ( even by the manaufacturer) to turn HT OFF.

See below. Is there no other option here?

Thanks,

Marvin

Yes, you will have the same problem also.  All the TV cards are all alike and you will have problem with Hyper-Treading.

Mainboard: DELL 8300
Chipset:
OS: Windows XP
CPU: DELL Pentium 4 , 2.6 GHZ
System Memory:
VGA Card: NDVIDIA GE FORCE FX 5200
Other System Info: LAN CARD: Intel Pro/100 MODEM: Conexant Smart HSFi V92 56K
Problem Description: Question - I am looking to buy a TV/FM Tuner Card for DELL 8300. I had been considering the ATI TV WONDER VE (for TV only) , or a Hauppauge WinTV model 401 , but in an Oct 1 post from Keith S, points out that " both cards are hyperthreading incompatible. Please disable HT in the BIOS if you wish to use either card. 'Hopefully' compatible software will be available. So, I am looking for other options. Can you please comment on the compatibility of AVerMedia Ultra TV PCI or AVeTVSutdio Deluxe with an Dell 8300? Thanks Marvin

Hyperthreading makes the computer think it has 2 processors. The only problem is that it only works if the 2 processes are not using the same part of the processor. Also the software has to be able to use it.The is not a lot of instances where it will help you right now because there are not many times you can actually use it,so if you really have to disable it for the TV tuner it's not that big a deal.
