What specific type of memory is supported by the Precision T3500?

The University I work for has recently decided to upgrade the RAM in a Precision T3500 we have. We decided to half max the memory at 12GB.

To this end, we purchased a 12GB kit containing 3x4GB sticks of DDR3-8500 (1066MHz) ECC Registered. Specific package: PSD312G1066ERK  Patriot memory. Upon installation, a beep code of 1-3-2 is heard, which according to the Diagnostics Manual http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/wsT3500/en/SM/diags.htm,

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

refers to an error in the first 64K of RAM. This occurs for each stick and so I DO NOT believe it is a case of bad Memory (we are independly verifying the RAM at the moment).

The technical manual makes no mention of specifics regarding Registered or non-registered. http://www.dell.com/downloads/emea/edb/Dell_Precision_T3500_Technical_Guide.pdf

Additionally, a talk with Technical support and an engineer as well reveals that the system SHOULD work with Registered or Non-Registered Dimms. Unfortunately, this post: http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19267206/19459951.aspx#19459951 tells me the opposite.

Can anyone confirm specifically what type of memory works in this system before I puchased more RAM that may or may not help?

Thank you.

Hi, RamoneB~

I'm currently experiencing the _exact_ same issue on the T3500 I recently purchased. The only difference is that I'm trying to use Samsung memory.

At first I was trying to install 2 4gb chips, and was informed by Dell support that, on this machine and with 4gb chips specifically, they had to be installed in threes. So, I ordered another one and now that it's here I'm still experiencing the same problem.

I'll be contacting support again for sure, but I was wondering - did you/Dell ever find a solution?

Thanks!

For what it's worth, I followed up with Dell support but never got an actual answer on what types of ECC ram are supported on the T3500. They even had a guy come out and replace my motherboard to see if that would help - and of course it didn't.

In the end I went out on my own and bought some UNBUFFERED ecc ram. Those chips are working just fine.

So, word to the wise - stay away from registered ecc ram on the T3500.

The T3500 does not support REGISTERED memory.

Memory that DOES work with the T3500 is Kingstons kit KTD-PE313E/4G and KTD-PE313E/8G. As long as you install them in "triples" you won't get any errors upon boot, since the system is triple-channel-configured. However, it will always boot if you install modules in "two-and-two".

With KTD-PE313E/8G memory, you can actually pimp a T3500 system with 48GB of memory, and I can verify that it actually works with flying colours (so far...)

Hi Joel, I am interested on any particulars involved with your "pimp" mod for your T3500. Aside from updating BIOS were any other steps taken? Thank you.

I checked it on Kingston site it doesn't show t3500  in list of systems with which it should be compatible.

However it says it's compatible with Dell t3600 t5500..

Does dell t5500 and t3500 uses sale ram?

I am considering ordering out for my system but I am shot skeptical.

I am also interested in knowing about your pimped up system. What other part number of ram could be compatible with it.

Also @dell what is the limiting factor when dell says it only supports up to 24gb ram.? Add far as I know now memory controller is inside cpu and some processors support rams well above 24gb..

I am currently running dell optiplex 755 desktop system with 12gb ram.

You cant mix ranks and larger than 4 gig dimms is NOT supported.

24 Gigs is a limitation based on the CPU and the memory map.

DDR3 PC3-12800 • 9-9-9-24 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V • 512Meg x 64 •

You CANNOT USE HIGH DENSITY QUAD RANK BUFFERED REGISTERED RAM EVER
