single threaded applications may run slower on a slower clocked pentium D. it's great for applications that can take advantage of it though, or for running multiple things at once.
if you want any significant performance increase over your 3.4 you'll have to wait for conroe or get AMD Athlon FX-62 or something simlar for that line.
well this is a way to get amd in a dell by the dell xps 700 homebuild and resell the mobo and proccesor and buy an amd motherboard and proccessor though i dont think the mobo would fit right im not sure if the xps 700 mobo is propriatary but what a novelty an amd in a dell and all is right with the world now lets see about installing mac osx...
anyway back to your post i say don`t buy right now because its about time for a full row of upgrades to come down the pipe new proccessor and new graphics wait about 2 months and then buy if you want to buy now id say take the money you would spend on your proccessor and upgrade your gpu to somthing like 512mb in either sli or none sli. There really isn`t much of a difference between the 2 in speed wise and you probably wouldn`t notice maybe a half to 1 second faster for applications im not sure what you do with your computer so im not sure if this would affect you or not but i say put a bit extra into graphics instead
