Why is it so expensive to increase memory?

Just ordered a Optiplex 745, E6600 running Windows XP Pro. I upgraded to 2 GB memory. If I wanted 4GB, Dell charges $729.00 more? We wanted more memory than 2GB, but that price is ridiculous!
Is this something we can add ourselves later?

Thanks,
Jane

Please check your memory type/speed. It must be 2 sticks of 1GB DDR2 667MHz though. If you open your case, it may give you a name of manufacturer. Try to get same ones, as long as you install two identical RAMs, it should be fine. Only problem is that if anything goes wrong your warranty will be voided.

In my experience, I don't have any problem with 3rd party RAMs as long as they are well-known. I installed two of 1GB non-ECC PC2100 Infineon RAMs by myself after I took out two of ECC 512MB PC2100 RAMs. Those were DELLs but it's manufactured by Infineon.

The $729 pricing is for 2 sticks of 2GB each, total of 4GB. If you went with 4 sticks of 1 GB each, the pricing increase is $215 (still much more than most retail, but a little closer to reality)

You'd need 4 DIMM slots, which I believe all of the 745 form factors have, except perhaps the USFF. I know the Mid Tower, Desktop, and Small Form Factor all have 4 slots - not sure about the USFF.

Here's the pricing options on the site where you choose the components:

4.0GB DDR2 Non-ECC SDRAM, 667MHz, (2DIMM) [add $729]
4.0GB DDR2 Non-ECC SDRAM, 667MHz, (4DIMM) [add $215]
