I also bought a larger power supply to handle the possibility of the new card needing more power. When I inserted the new R9 270 card, connected the 6-pin cable and powered on the XPS, the R9 270 card's led light came on, the two fans on the card started spinning, but there was no video output from the card. After chatting with ASUS tech support and a separate chat with Dell we determined that the stock 460 watt Dell power supply provided enough power to run the card, but it was not being recognized by the BIOS.
Dell confirmed that the A06 BIOS in the XPS 8300 will not recognize the Radeon R9 270 card. The most powerful graphics card that the XPS will support from AMD is the Radeon 7750. Dell does not plan to release any newer BIOS for the XPS8300 so we are limited to the generation of cards that were known as of that A06 release on 17/20/2011.
I can confirm that the, EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB SC GAMING ACX 2.0 willwork with a Dell XPS 8300 with the Ao6 Bios and the stock 460w power supply. My XPS 8300 came with an HD-6870.

It wont with the stock power supply and its likely that it wont post at all due to UEFI bios requirements.
