Windows XP, Firewire, and memory Question!

I want to upgrade to Windows XP, I have a Dimension 8100 256 megs of ram - soon to be 1280 , im puttin 2 512 in soon.

Where do I find the Chipset Drivers for Windows XP , and all the drivers for my comp for Windows XP. My sound card is a SBLive! ValueDigital, but I cant find new driver downloads for it anywhere that add like Audio HQ, all that stuff. The SB CD That came with my computer doesnt have Windows XP Drivers. The Dell Resource CD doesnt have WinXP Drivers. The only drivers I can find for my comp for XP are the ones on dells support site that include the net card, the video card, and dell solution center.

Also to, will the E-Support button on the front of my comp work in XP?

Do I need to call DELL and have them send me a new Resource CD, and a new SoundBlaster CD? I need Audio HQ and all that stuff the Sound Blaster CD ads, and I dont wana format till im sure I have all the drivers. RIght now I have Windows ME!

Second question:

My computer came with a Firewire card in it, because I got the studio bundle that comes with a card. It ses the card only works with Digital Video cameras? So If I wanted to get a External Firewire Hard Drive, I couldnt?

Third Question:

My computer is under 6 months old, it came with 256 megs of ram, 2 128 chips and I wana buy 2 512s and put them in. Are the 2 256s I already have ECC ram, or Non ECC ram. On dells website they only sell 512 ECC Ram. Is ECC slower than non ecc?

Thanks peoples!

Chipset drivers are included in XP, as is a driver for the SBLive (and there is also an update on the XP update site). If you want the various extra SB devices, you will have to go to the Creative Labs site ( http://www.americas.creative.com/) and download their version of the XP drivers.

No. XP does not support the device (Metolious Vendor Defined Sensor. You can install the driver from your old version of Dell Support Center (it isn't in the XP version), which is in \Apps\DSC\Support\metdrvr, but that just gets rid of the Unsupported Device entry in Device Manager, it does not enable the button.

There are no such things available, except for purchasers of new machines, so there is no point of calling Dell.

You do not need extra installed software to use the firewire card (the software is for the camera); XP contains firewire drivers and will automatically install them when it detects the card.

It may say on your invoice, or you could email tech support (include your Service Tag Number and they can tell you). ECC is minsculely slower, but I doubt that you can tell the difference.

You may want to visit the Kingston.com site and use their configurator to get a second price on the RDRAM. The site has lots of data on RAM.

Recommend that you do a clean install instead of upgrade.

You may also want to check out the WinXP forum posts in the Software forums for WinXP specific info, including link to clean install instructions.

Hope this helps.
