Windows XP Generic host process error and Windows Activation problem

Question

I have a Dell Dimension 8400, 3GB RAM, Windows XP. The motherboard went bad and I had a local shop replace it. The first time I got it back from them it had a problem with a 'Status' program stuck in a loop, wanting to load from a '1' drive. Took it back and the shop said it had tons of virus infections. They said they cleaned out the virus'. They also said the updated Windows and Activated it. I fixed the 'Status' thing with the help from the Internet by putting in the HP Driver CD and running it. Also a problem with a 'Generic host process for Win32 services has encountered a problem and needs to close' message. After clicking 'Okay' I couldn't select anything with the mouse and the keyboard didn't work. And I get the Activate Windows warning but if you pick it, it just disappears. Trying to Activate Windows from the Start menu it comes up with missing dot3api.dll or missing dot3dlg.dll. They are showing up in C:\windows\system32\dllcache but for some reason they are not being found. I tried Windows Update but it loads some files and the returns an 'Error number 0x8024d007' and stops. I found a way to reset the days remaining on the Windows Activate but no way to actually Activate Windows. The Generic host process error doesn't seem to affect the actual running of Windows. The shop updated XP from SP2 to SP3. They are not being very helpful on figuring out what the problem is. Can anyone help?

'HP Driver CD'?? :emotion-3: You paid for bad service.  The machine will need to be wiped clean and reinstalled. Did they install another D8400 motherboard or something else?

At this point, you may just want to back up your personal files on external media and do a clean reformat/reinstall of Windows. If they replaced the motherboard with a non-Dell board, you're going to need to buy a retail Windows XP SP3 CD because the Dell OEM CD won't install Windows if the PC has a non-Dell motherboard.
