Windows XP Pro stalling at examining disk screen
So I'm trying to reinstall Windows XP to my Dell XPS 700 but the disk always stops when the screen reads "Examining 238418 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on NvAtaBus..." I am unable to boot into Windows that is on the drive already and I'm wondering if I need to format the hard drive first. I am using the original installation disk that came with the computer.

The Dell XP reinstallation disc can both, partition and format the hard drive as part of reinstalling XP.
How to carry out a clean reinstall of XP.
First, disconnect all the peripherals from the system, except the keyboard, mouse and monitor.
You can use the Dell's Guide for a Manual Reinstallation of windows HERE and maybe this interactive guide for a clean reinstall of XP HERE can help.
While installing, remember to delete all existing partitions when you are prompted, then recreate the partitions and format the hard drive, following by installing XP.
After installing XP, you need to install the drivers and applications in the correct order.
A hint: After installing each driver, restart the system.
Followed by installing the Anti Virus utility, updating the definitions, then all the critical Microsoft updates.
Bev.

I have also read that with the XPS 700 series, the disk reader may need a driver update but I'm wondering how i would be able to do this since i cannot reach past the OS loading screen

I am able to boot up the DVD but when i press Enter to start the installation, it stops at a blue screen before the license agreement which reads:
Windows XP Profesional Setup
Examining 238418 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on NvAtaBus...
I have stayed at this point for about an hour and has not yet changed. I tried using another hard drive i have to boot on the OS it has but the computer will just reset before the OS is loaded. I'm wondering if this is a problem in the motherboard ar the hard drive or in a connection of the two.

The NVIDIA nForce® 500 Series CHIPSET is not native to XP. F6 floppy diskette drivers must be used.
http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/236
AHCI is not supported on the nForce5 or nForce4 series or even the nForce6 series with the exception of the chipsets with a motherboard GPU onboard (ie Geforce 7050 and Geforce 7150, etc..). The motherboards which support AHCI do not support SATA IDE mode through the native XP drivers.

Am I supposed to be looking for an nVidia driver download for something on my motherboard or the video card because for the video card it is a 114 MB file which i don't believe will fit on a 1.44 MB floppy.
