XPS 200 memory support question

Question

I'm looking at upgrading the memory in my XPS 200. I currently have four 512 MB sticks of DDR2-533 memory. The Dell upgrade pages shows that I can buy and install two 2GB sticks of DDR2-800 memory. MY question is, while the new, faster memory will fit and work, will the motherboard limit the actual speed of the memory down to 533 or 667? Or will it actually run at 800? Chaz

I downloaded the Service Manual for my XPS 200 from the Dell Support site. According to the manual, the motherboard will run PC 5300 and PC 6400 memory at the slower PC 4200 rate. That is the limit of the chipset support on the motherboard.

Thank for the reply. Crucial's site not withstanding, that does not mean the the chip set on my MB will recognize the memory as either PC2-5300 or PC2-6400. On Dell's site, the upgrade memory they sell is either Corsair PC 6400 or Dell brand PC 6400. I'm curious as to what the limits of the motherboard's chip set is.

Hi Chaz, Crucial is showing PC2-5300 modules for your system, so I suspect it's going to run at 667 MHz regardless. You can run up to 4x2GB modules.

The specs for your system say '400-MHz and 533-MHz DDR2 unbuffered SDRAM'. So I suspect it will run at 533 MHz.
