Do you have a 64-bit version of Windows (or Linux)? If not, adding more memory is a waste of money as 32-bit Windows (or linux) can never use the memory over the 4GB size.

If you do have a 64-bit version Operating System, per the online specs of the XPS 420 <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>, it supports up to 4 x 2GB, so 8GB.

Note: what do you do with your computer that makes you need more memory? Unless you do high end photo or video editing, or maybe play with virtual machines, it's unlikely that adding memory will make any difference in performance for you.

Great thank you!  that what I was looking for.  Looking on line and asking my colleagues, I kept hearing either 4 or 8 gigs was the max.

I am running on Vista 32, but I am installing XP 64 this weekend.  I am a digital sculptor and my pipeline revolves around maya and zbrush so I need to get the maximum performance out of my computer.  My knowledge of hardware is nowhere near where it should be, and I am hoping the 8 gigs will help.

Thank you again for your help!

The XPS 420 supports 8gb of RAM, but to address the 8gb you need a 64-bit operating system.
