XPS 600 adding memory

The XPS 600 had four 512 sticks of memory and a 256mb video card. I removed the four sticks and put in four 1GB sticks of memory (all the same). I also swapped the video card for a 1GB video card.

Task Manager still only shows 2GB of memory. The Bios shows that I have four 1GB sticks in it. Because it is a 32bit OS, I was told it may show only 3.something GB. But it still only shows 2GB. The OS is XP Media Center. Is there something I'm suppose to run to have it update something?

I read something about adding a /3GB switch to the boot.ini file but it seems a little vague if this is a good idea or not.

Hi,

Your XPS 600 supports memory not more than 2GB for 32Bit Operating System and 8GB for 64Bit Operating System and the speed of the memory should not be more than 533 or 667 MHz.

Great. OK, is it better to have two 1GB sticks or four 512mb sticks in there?

Thanks for the info.

Since I pulled out the four 512 mb ram cards and replaced them with four 1 gb ram cards, the computer seems a little slower.

Since the current OS  will only support 2gb of ram, am I somehow confusing it with the four sticks of 1 gb ram?

Should I just use two 1 gb ram sticks or put the four 512 mb sticks back in?

The only reason I keep the four sticks in is in case at some later date I go to a 64 bit OS and just so I would not lose them.
