XPS 630i - unable to install Win7 to SSD
During fresh installing Windows 7 64bit on SSD 128GB Kingston the installation process hangs in the middle (on "updating system registry settings").
I tried many options, I think the main problem is in BIOS, there is no option to set SATA mode into COMPATIBLE or IDE...
I am helples because I tried:
- I tried every SATA connector
- I unpluged all usb and sata drives (except DVD drive)
- I plug SSD disk into another computer, switch SATA mode to COMPATIBLE (from AHCI) and I install windows on it succesfuly. Then plug SSD disk into 630i and the Windows is unable to start.
- I tried use windows7 builtin backup and restore of my old windows installation - the restore process found SSD disk but it is unable to use it as destination disk for restore (it shows as C: unlocated partition)
Please help
Thank You
Tomas

Hi tomas.zverbik,
I apologize I didn’t give you this step earlier but I was not sure if it will work with a single drive.
I request you to go to RAID configuration, as you said by following the below steps:
(1) Restart the computer.
(2) Press Ctrl+N when prompted to enter the RAID BIOS
(3) The Define a New Array window appears.
(4) Using up/down arrow keys come to SATA 1
(5) Press to navigate to the RAID Mode field.
(6) Using up/down arrow keys come down until the striping mode appears in the RAID Mode box.
(7) Press to navigate to the Free Disks field
(8) Using up/down arrow keys select the SSD hard drive to include in the RAID array, and then use the right-arrow key to move the selected drive from the Free Disks field to the Array Disks field.
(9) After assigning the hard drives to an array, press . The Clear disk data prompt appears.
NOTE: The Data will be lost
(10) Press to clear all data from the selected drives. The Array List window appears.
(11) To review the details of the array that you set up, use the arrow keys to highlight the array in the Array Detail window and press the Array Detail window appears.
(12) Press to return to the previous screen
(13) Press to exit the RAID BIOS.
Now try doing a clean reinstall.
If you have any further questions, please reply to the same post.

Hi tomas.zverbik,
This issue could be due to a compatibility issue as the AHCI mode is absent in this computer. But lets follow the below steps and check if it fixes the issue:
1. Reset default in BIOS-
(1) Restart the computer
(2) Keep tapping the F2 key until the BIOS screen appears.
(3) In the BIOS screen, using the left/right arrow keys move to ‘exit’ option.
(4) Now, using the up/down arrow keys move to ‘Load setup defaults’ and hit enter.
(5) Then select yes
(6) Then move up to ‘Exit saving changes’ and hit enter.
(7) Then select Yes
Note: The Mouse does not work in BIOS environment.
Check if the same issue happens, if yes then follow the below steps to enable RAID(only on the SSD drive)
(1) Restart the computer.
(2) Keep tapping the F2 key until the BIOS screen appears.
(3) In the BIOS screen, using the left/right arrow keys move to ‘Advanced’ option
(4) Now, using the up/down arrow keys move to ‘IDE/SATA’ Configuration.
(5) Then, using the up/down arrow keys move to ‘Raid configuration’ and hit enter
(6) Select any of the SATA drives (whichever has SSD configured in it) and hit enter
(7) Now scroll down to ‘enabled’ and hit enter.
This should fix the issue.
If you have further questions, please reply to the same post.

Hello Kiran,
thank you for your fast reply.
I did all what you wrote but the problem is still remaining:
1. Reset bios to default- the same problem
2. enable raid on ssd drive - installation process is unable to recognize ssd drive in step with chosing destination drive to install.
Is there some drivers which could helps identifing ssd in raid mode? I tried some (nForce 650 sli) without success. - but I am not sure if this is right driver.
During boot I see screen which offer me raid configuration after pressing ctrl+n , could I do something there?
Isnt problem in sata cable? I dont need special ssd cable?
Where I bought ssd disk they offer me service for 50 euro which solve my problem but I am affraid I tried all options :-(.
Thank you for any other tips.
Tomas.

This error is common on SSD's that have bugged firmware. You should be set to AHCI.
