XPS 700 Freezes After Windows Update

Since the old XPS board is now locked, I am posting this reply to Arlmed's thread as a new topic in the general hardware forum. I too have an XPS 700 that completely froze after booting up, with ctrl+alt+del not working or anything else, for that matter.

When I uninstalled the latest batch of Windows updates (including Office 2007 updates), everything returned to normal. I tried installing the updates several times and they are clearly to blame. EDIT: I am on Win Vista.

Does anyone have a solution to this as obviously it would be best to get those updates installed?

Thanks!

Benjamin

ORIGINAL MESSAGE, FROM OLD XPS BOARD, posted by Arlmed:

My XPS 700, E6600, dual video cards, 2GB mem 667, Win XP Pro SP2, has been working off and on for about 5 days now. It would run fine for about 20min. then freezes up. I had to physically hold down the power button to restart it. Finally today it could get to the desktop screen and that's pretty much it nothing else could be done. CTRL-ALT-DEL does nothing to it; the hour glass runs on and on. I have done the following: 1)System restore: to various dates from a week to a week and 1/2 ago with no success; 2)Ran diagnostics using the XPS Resource CD: hardware test: custom test: processor: when it gets to L1 Cache(Multiprocessor), it would automatically restart without fail over and over again ; 3)If I skipped the L1 Cache(Multiprocessor) and go to L2 Cache(Multiprocessor) exact same thing would happen i.e. the computer restart itself. What does this means? Is the processor going bad on me? Please help. -- by arlmed on 08-22-2007 09:54 PM

You might want to consider the motherboard upgrade option offered by Del to owners of the XPS 700 and the XPS 710.

In the interim I would suspect hardware conflicts with Windows Vista.

From the Vista start icon type in msinfo32.exe, press enter

From the system information screen, select Hardware Reseources, Conflicts Sharing

From the right side panel you will be able to determine where to begin looking for conflicts.

Next go to Dell Support Drivers page for the XPS 700 and review the latest drivers to include chipset reading the update information to see if any issues are resolved with the update.

Thanks. A hardware incompatibility is what I suspect as well and I have already ordered the motherboard upgrade. I was just hoping someone had a magical fix. :) In the meantime, I'll take your suggestion and will look for conflicts. All my drivers are up to date, though...
