XPS 720 - Processor Upgrade Questions

I have a Dell XPS 720 (actually 700 with 720MB upgrade).   Currently have a Intel Pentium D Processor 950 3.4GHz installed.  would like to upgrade but I am having problems finding out what processors are compatible with my 720 Motherboard.

Does anyone have a list or link to the compatible CPU's for the XPS 720 MB ?

Also wouldn't mind finding the list of compatible memory speeds/etc.. for my XPS 720 either.

All intel CPU up to QX6850 is supported by XPS 720 A05 BIOS. But if u wanna try QX9XXX series, it wont boot unless u keep C1NE on in bios, and leave the power cord attached into the system when installing intel 45nm QX9xxx CPU.

dig the forum, someone did it this way.

Officially, A05 wont support intel 45nm QX9xxx CPU, it looks it could be done alternative.

cheers.

Since you have AO5 i would look at the E8400 if your not interested in oc. Couple that with some good 1066 mem and the box will rock..

I would stay away from the Q9XXX series as even though someone managed to get one to run there has been no official support from Dell and it might just be hit or miss wether it will run or not. plus they are pricey

Think I will be going with - CORSAIR XMS2 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory and a Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor.  Won't fully benefit from the full 4GB of ram due to vista 32 bit but should make my machine alot faster.

Any suggestions/comments?

I upped my sys from the Pent D  to the  Q6600 and like it a lot..

Might want to suggest look at the OCZ reaper series of mem I run them and the perform very well.

Corsair XMS2 CL5 or CL4 kit? be aware,XPS 720 can not change the RAM voltage in BIOS, so for CL5 kit, it's fine to run on 1.8V at 5-5-5-18. IF u gonna buy CL4 kit, then u have to manually increase the RAM voltage to 2.1V on nTune.

It will change the voltage if you have SLI/EPP memory.. mine will run at 1.8 with epp of and 2.0 with Epp on.

If the mem is not EPP certified then you will need mem that runs at 1.8v.

HI.
I came across this older posting of yours and wondered what a more current reply to the same question might be?

I have a Original XPS 700with the Dell replaced/upgraded XPS720 MB.
I'd like to upgrade the CPU and RAM (and anything else!) to make this thing as fast as possible.

Thoughts here in 2010?
THANK YOU!

XPS720 (Dell Upgrade(fix) to XPS720 from original XPS700)
O/S = Windows-7 64bit
MB = d Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS v1.10 A06
CPU = Pentium D 3.60GHz DualCore, 800MHz Bus, 4MB L2Cache
RAM = 4GB, 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Disk = total 4.5TB from 4 internal SATA drives
Video = 512GB ATI Radeon HD 3870

I would definatly look for an new processor. something in the Q6600 to QX6850 range. These are rather older chips but you still might be able to find some on Ebay.

You could also switch to 800 Mhz ram. Just be careful with the operating voltage of the ram sticks especially if you plan to use all four slots. Keep your ram voltage requirements to 1.8v ..
