XPS 8100: Compatible Power Supplies
Before I purchased the 8100 I had to replace the power supply in an older XPS 420. This proved irritating, since it didn't take a standard power supply and needed one compatible with Dell. In preparation for upgrading to an Nvidia GTX 460, I need to upgrade the anemic 350w power supply in this machine to at least 500w. What brands have others used? I have the service manual so I can replace it easy enough. I just don't want to spend $80 on a new PS and have to return it over and over again trying to find one that fits.
Thanks all.

Dont know why you had a hard time with the 420 supply as that would take any standard ATX supply with a 20+4 or 24 pin connector. The 8100 will be the same. Dell stopped using proprietary supplies a few years ago and and all newer systems like the 8100 will take standard ATX 24 pin supplies.

Hi Jonsleeper,
You'd be much better off going with the XPS 9100.

Is that really viable at this point? Would Dell take an exchange without my having to pay shipping costs? Then I'd be waiting another two weeks to get the new machine.

Davet:
The 420 had nonstandard mounting screw locations. Must've been one of the last Dell produced. Thanks!

I am having the same problem. My 420 has finally gone into meltdown and i'm considering a rescue mission commencing with a new power supply and one considerably higher wattage than the standard supply. I am researching the xps 630, 750w supply at the moment. You were right to assume that a standard atx supply wouldn't fit, they don't. There are two lugs in the dell supply housing that need to lock up into the xps420 case. This is a design restriction placed upon us by Dell that isn't easily worked around. Pity, because the 420 case is of the highest quality in my opinion and well worth one's time and effort rebuilding. Like you, i won't part with a penny until i am sure that another psu will fit properly and correctly. I feel that Dell is unreasonable in not supplying it's customers with the information they need given that Dell users are the first to actively promote their products in the face of stout competition from the east. A self build at this point is attractive given that standard parts and components have become far superior to Dell's own offerings in the last few years. I for one would like to see Dell's customer co-operation policies kicked up several notches in the very near future. Hopefully quick enough to prevent their customers from seeking out other options in, what is, a very competitive market.
