XPS 8300 Power Connectors

I'm happy with my new 8300, but I knew at the onset that it did not have USB 3.0 capability. As 3.0 USB devices are already on the market and 3.0 is MUCH faster, I bought a Rocketfish PCIx1 board to have 2 3.0 USB ports. Then I discovered my problem. Power supply connectors have changed since my old computer. Below is a picture of the old style that the Rocketfish board needs.

And this is what the 8300 has. (2 types, One at the top and one near the bottom)

Any suggestions?

Hi Compubozo,

Wow, that's a new one. Does that cable connect to the 4-pin power connection on the card as shown in the startup guide for the card? In the manual for the card it shows that connection requiring a floppy drive power connector. So you could use a molex to FDD cable.

Ok, so I was right. That's the FDD power connector. But the 8300 appears to have regular molex connector, which would be more easily adapted to a FDD power connector.

Thanks for your reply Osprey,

To your question, I say yes, but I'd like to clarify to make sure we're together. "that cable" you refer to, is the one in the top picture with the dime. That photo was taken from an older power supply, and the 8300 does not have this connector. Now your suggestion prompted me to go looking, and I found a helpful site. FYI it's www.playtool.com/.../connectors.html

According to the info there, the 8300 has: 6 pin PCI Express power cable and SATA power cables. I believe the rocketfish needs the 5 volts , so I may have to adapt from Sata to the Floppy drive power cable connector because the 6 pin PCI Express power cable only has 12V.

You did help get me on track, so thanks again.

I'll post again after I check warranty issues and move forward.

Unfortunately, the available Molex connector only has 12v and lacks 5v. I believe I found what I'm looking for:

LP4 to SATA Power Cable Adapter with Floppy Power - F/F

I don't know that I can load a pickture here, but a browser search of the above will show it.

I will come back and close this after successful installation.
