Love that this cannot be answered. I don't even bother with the premium phone tech support I have. It is almost impossible to get transferred to a higher level tech that may know as much as I do and I'm hoping more.
I really don't care anymore. I built an entire new machine. Awesome and I won't be needing to build another for a very long time. Dell will never see my money again. If there are people out there still foolish enough to buy their products they can waste their money.
I have the same version of the XPS 8500, purchased in June 2012, I still have the original GPU GT 640 GDDR5 and I'm planning to upgrade it to the EVGA GTX 970.
I'd like to ask you the following
Did you have to do something else to make this EVGA video card works in your system?
What OS do you have?
And what is the version or model number of the EVGA GTX 970 that you are using?
My specs are:
Graphic card manufacturer and model number: GT 640
Bios: A12 - 8/28/2013
Operating System: WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM 64 bits
INTEL CORE i7-3770 - 3.4 GHz
Power supply manufacturer if not Dell 460w PSU : CORSAIR CX600M

I have the same version of the XPS 8500, purchased in November 2012.
1) The motherboard has PCIe 3.0
2) Don't know - you'll have to explore their forums
3) I've had an EVGA GTX 660ti and recently replaced it with an EVGA GTX 970 - works great and highly recommended
4) No need to upgrade the PS - Dell typically underrates them, I'm still using the one that came with the PC
5) As long as you upgrade to the A12 bios, you won't have the same problems as the XPS 8700
Best wishes!

Hello Oscar:
I´ve seen in Dell's official web site, that the following graphics cards works on the XPS 8500:
nVIDIA Geforce GT 640/G405/GTX 660M/GTX650Ti/GTX645/GT620
AMD Radeon 6xxx/7xxx/8xxx/R9 xxx
Because those are the drivers available to this PC model
and in the Guide reference from 10/2013 they mention:
•
NVIDIA GeForce GT 620 – 1 GB GDDR5
•
AMD Radeon HD 7570 – 1 GB GDDR5
•
NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 – 1 GB GDDR5
•
AMD Radeon HD 7770 – 2 GB GDDR5
•
AMD Radeon HD 7870 – 2 GB GDDR5
