XPS 8500 - Firewire card

There was no option to add a firewire port as I was configuring a new XPS 8500.  Is there an expansion slot in which I can add a card?

And why doesn't Dell have that as an option?

It sounds like you  are trying to install a standard PCI card - this system has no PCI slots.  You need a PCI Express firewire card.

For eample,

There are 3 PCI-E X1 slots.

The one I would Recommend would be

Thanks for the pic.  That will help a lot.   I've ordered my XPS 8500 and should be here by Friday.  I already have a Dynex 3-Port IEEE 1394 PCI Host Adapter (DX-FC103.)   This should work, shouldn't it?  I won't need anymore ports than this provides and the 400Mpbs s/b adequate for my needs.

Would like to know if your PCIe 1394 card worked in the XPS 8500

Can you suggest a cheaper alternative to this $80 part?  I would like two firewire ports, but don't need anything extra.  Thanks!

Well, it's not letting me upload the pics.  Will keep trying.

Sorry for the delayed reply.  (Husband had surgery; garden needed tending; unexpected problems with vehicles; .  Things are slowly returning to normal.:)

I finally got to try to install the card today.  No, it didn't work.  I don't know what it's called....but the piece that the card slips into is way too small - short.  I attached pictures.  This is not what I'm used to seeing.  The only slot with a long piece is the one that's being used for the HD monitor inputs.

I'm open to suggestions or if I missed something, please let me know.  Never had any problems adding anything to my PC's before.

I think you are correct.  I didn't realize it until my attempted install.

Where did you find this photo of the XPS 8500 Motherboard?  Could you please post a link where I can get more info on it?  I'm thinking about doing some upgrades but I'd like to see this Mobo's specs first.

Any chance, would you know if I would be able to overclock a i7-3770k processor through the BIOS on this motherboard?

Thanks for your time.

Elijah, where is the key to the numbers on the graphic posted of the XPS 8500 motherboard?

Thanks.

Hi, can you tell me what is the model # and make of this motherboard?  This is the motherboard I have.  The only online manual I can find shows a different (old 9-pin) front panel connector than the one in the picture.  #16 in this picture is the connetor I have.  I am trying to figure out what each pin does on #16.  TIA!

Hello,

I just received my XPS 8500 with windows 8.

I plugged in the Startech firewire 1394a PCI Express card

but it doesn't get recognised (does not appear in the device manager). I tried slot 1 and 2 but neither seem to work.

Is it a problem with Windows 8 or with the computer? I have the same card on another Windows 7 PC working perfectly.

Thanks for your help,
