XPS 8500 Operating System
Hello,
I was on chat with a dell agent last week trouble shooting a fairly new computer I purchased from a 3rd party.
After the agent led me through some things to try, he determined my operating system is corrupt, I need to delete all data, reinstall the operating system and drivers. I don't have disc that came with the computer and he gave me a link. Unfortunately the link says it's for an XP not Windows 7.
Can anyone share with me the link to find where to get the information he intended to give me on deleting the data, reinstalling the operating system and drivers.
Appreciate the assistance.
Cynthia

Any blue screens or just a hard freeze? Do you have anything else isntalled on the computer apart from Windows and some drivers?
Have you run the Dell diagnostics yet? Press F12 at the Dell BIOS screen and select diagnostics, run all the diagnostics and any extended tests.

Hi, No blue screen just a hard freeze. I haven't any other programs on the computer. I will do the diagnostics and see what comes up.
Thanks,
Cynthia

Whew, I started the tests this morning and just now finished. Took an incredibly long time and found no errors.
Any suggestions.
Thanks,
Cynthia

So, the computer allows you to execute the file completely, your then restart Windows, and Windows freezes after the restart? I assume that if you shut the computer down at that point and start it up, Windows appears to run normally. When Windows starts the second time, are there any warnings that pop up saying that Windows has recovered from a problem?

The computer gets through the extraction & set up, I restart and it appears I can go to the next file extraction but then suddenly freezes up. Not sure what the issues are now to trouble shoot.
Thanks

At what point in the execution does the computer freeze? Does the file get through the extraction process before the computer stops responding? If so, it is possible to follow the path to the files and try running the setup program in Administrator mode.

Hello, I thought I was making good progress to start installing drivers although it takes forever after each reboot and only got two drivers installed in suggested order. So...now I get an error message that the computer can't restart due to a bad driver and decided to start the process all over again. The only trouble is, restarting, pressing F12 will not allow me to do so. I select to start the process with the DVD and I I get an error message again that windows cannot start. Not sure again what is wrong and why it's such a difficult process to do this. Going on 5 days now. Sigh

Hey seems like you are having alot of issues.
If you just leave Windows 7 to run on the desktop. i.e. don't attempt installing any drivers or any programs. What happens do you get a blue screen or a hard freeze?
Do you have a folder on your C: drive called Windows.old? (Go to Start > Computer > C: do you see a Windows.old folder there)?
If the diagnostics pass and the blue screen/hard freeze only comes up when you try to install something it could be some sort of Malware from the old installation.
Just a note on the driver installation
Running the .exe file Rxxxxxx should extract the driver to C:\Dell\Drivers\Rxxxxxx and then run the installer automatically (again the R# are replaced with a longer file name in your case). If no installer runs, you will need to navigate to this folder and click on any setup.exe files.
We will take for example R284334 the chipset driver for my XPS 8300:
Double clicking the file, you should get a run prompt select yes.
Select Continue
Select Ok
Select Ok. At this stage the setup should start and you should start the installation. If it does not the driver is not installed. In my XPS 8300 (and I suspect many other systems) the installers do not automatically run. Therefore in this case I have to go to C:\Dell\Drivers\R284334 (you will have to go to the number of your driver) and click setup.
Accept the UAC prompt and install via the setup program. Do you get a screen like this?
Usually a series of clicking next, next, finish and then rebooting. It freezes when you want to reboot?

Doing so,only takes me to the Windows Error Recovery Screen and only options are Launch Startup Repair or Start Windows Normally.
