XPS 8700 - How to write to double layer DVD+R?

I have no trouble writing to standard DVD-R discs on this computer, but my burning software (ImgBurn) locks up if I try to write to a double layer DVD+R.  Is there a firmware upgrade I need or does the DVD burner that comes with this computer simply not burn double layer discs?

The XPS 8700 came with several optical drives. We need to know which specific drive is installed. Check the Device Manager or your invoice.

* Go here and download/save CDIdentifier.exe to your Windows desktop
* Run it. It will tell you what the capabilities are of the optical drive

Well, it doesn't specify DVD+R, so I guess that's a "no."

What version of Windows?

According to this, the Hitachi-LG HL-DT-ST GHB0N drive can read/write to DVD+ DL disks. So is there something wrong with your drive?

There is a firmware update offered for this drive on that site, but I know absolutely nothing about the site or what that update does, so you download the file and update the firmware entirely at your own risk.

Strongly suggest you manually set a system restore point before downloading that file, if you choose to download it, just to be safe. :emotion-5:

Even the DVD drive in my 12-year-old Dimension 8400 burns double-layer DVDs, so I'd be surprised if yours can't...

I am using Windows 10.  This was *not* my choosing!  Microsoft upgraded the computer from 7 to 10 in the middle of the night without anyone clicking on anything that agreed to this.  I was furious when it happened!  But until now, I hadn't noticed any problems.

I started to install the program at the link you included, but they users agreement made it clear that running the program was going to feed third party ads that use cookies to my computer.  I bought a blu ray burner last night and I think I'll just install that instead (I've already modified this computer enough that the warranty was voided long ago).

Glad you read the EULA, and hope you stopped that installation. That's why I wanted you to set a Restore point, just in case...

Lots of people got forced into Win 10, even though they didn't want it. Happened on my Win 8.1 laptop but I removed 10 and reverted back to 8.1.

Changing parts doesn't necessarily void the warranty. So if the DVD drive was installed by Dell and your warranty hasn't officially expired, they might replace it for you.

Hope the BluRay works well...
