XPS 8900 Rumors? News? Facts? Sightings?

Looks like the XPS 8900 is on its way...

http://www.wsj.com/articles/your-next-computer-should-be-a-desktop-1439316558

If it’s power that matters, desktops can provide more per dollar because they offer more space and fewer power concerns than a laptop. Dell gave me an early peek at its smokin’ new XPS 8900, a soon-to-be-launched top free-standing tower computer. It contains Intel’s Core i7-6700K processor, one of the new chips awesomely code-named Skylake.

This tower of power, which looks like Darth Vader’s PC and can cost as little as $700 and as much as several thousand, blasted through the photos, video and games I sent its way. It also has photographer-friendly features built in, like multiple-sized memory card readers and a plethora of USB ports, right on top. And as any PC gamer will tell you, being able to customize—and perpetually upgrade—a desktop tower makes it last longer.

I received my 950 Pro yesterday. I used ZTC-EX001 Adapter. I did a PC reset from my recovery drive to the SSD. Here is the results:

One minor annoyance when using the M2 PCIe adapter is the HDD light no longer flashes when the SSD is active.

What slot are you using for the adapter?  In the technical diagrams for the 8900 I see the following:

- Solid State drive slot

- PCI-Express x16 card slot (slot 4) my graphics card is here

- PCI -Express x1 card slot (Slot 3) used for my Hauppauge Colossus card

- PCI -Express x16 card slot (Slot 4) open

I do not see the PCI - Express x4 slot that others have said they have used.  Can this card go into the PCI -Express x16 slot (Slot 4)?

Yea, I noticed that as well. My adapter card has a red led that flashes when there's activity but the only was to see that is if I leave the case open. LOL.

Your correct. I used that PCIe x16 (Slot 4) based on the service manual. I'm getting access to all four lanes from this slot.

My XPS 8900SE arrived yesterday as well as a 256GB Samsung 950 Pro. Replaced the factory installed 256GB SSD from the M.2 slot with the Samsung 950 Pro. When I booted up the PC and checked the BIOS, the 950 Pro was not visible in the BIOS.

Is there a setting in the XPS8900 BIOS that I need to change to make the 950Pro SSD drive visible?

It seems like several folks here have been able to set up the 950 as a boot drive for windows 10. I just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Mine has a 4x PCIe slot..... weird.

I'm debating between A Samsung 850 Pro Sata III SSD and a newer 950 Pro M.2 with the PCI-E 4x adapter, my biggest concerns are longevity and heat / throttling.

(probly won't use the on-board M.2 slot as it's wired 1x)

Another forum I read where someone stuck a 120mm fan right at the end of the adapter and it helped reduce throttling.  I'm wondering if I put this 950 pro at the very bottom PCI-E slot on my XPS 8900 that sucker could get blazing hot.  And of course heat is usually the killer of electronics.  I feel like Sata iii conventional SSD like the 850 pro might be a more long term reliable solution, despite not being as fast as the NGFF drive.

Have you run into any temperature issues or throttling issues with your 950 pro?

Folks, mystery solved ... the internal M.2 PCIe slot is crippled, it's a PCIe 1x slot (aka single lane) and you will only get around 800 MBps out of it ... I just received my Addonics ADM2PX4 directly from them within 3 days, don't mess around getting it from anywhere else, just go to http://www.shopaddonics.com/ (shout out for them, they rock!!). I plugged it into slot SLOT3 if you are looking at the manual which appears to be incorrectly labeled as a PCIe 1x but actually is a PCIe 4x (aka 4 lane), not the PCIe 16x, etc. I am getting a FULL 2500 MB/s read and 1500 MB/s write as advertised by Samsung on their 950 PRO M.2, yeah!!

Just another thought.  The M2 port is listed as supporting 10 GPS yet people are getting only 800 MPS out of it.  To me this is either

1) A defect with the design of the motherboard and it should be fixed and replace with a new revised motherboard by Dell

2) Is somehow being limited by the BIOS and needs a BIOS update

3) Is false advertising.  Its like buying a car that you are told can go up to 100MPH and once you have it you find out that the gas peddle will only depress far enough to let you go up to 20 MPH.

The bottom line is even though we can buy a card to get around this problem, I would suggest we all start calling Dell technical support and log in this problem.  We should not let them off the hook to deliver on their commitments.  They need to fix this.  I called them last night and logged this issue and I have a case number.  I suggest everyone should do that.  This way if they come out with a revised motherboard you would be entitled to receive it.

Anyone correct me if I am wrong but these cards can go into either slot 3 or 4 and get the full throughput.  Is that correct?

You can use either the PCIe x4 or x16 slots but the Addonics ADM2PX4 is a PCIe x4 so it will not fit in the PCIe x1 slot. With this card in the Samsung 950 shows as 10 Gbps with 4 lanes, and I get the full speed out of it as advertised.

Now where can I find Dell listing the specs of the M.2 PCIe slot, and clearly it's a PCIe x1 (or single lane) slot, so either use it as a PCIe x1 slot or get a card like the above, less than $30 including shipping and call it a day.

I called Dell Tech support and they confirmed the M2 slot on the XPS 8900 is rated at 10GPS.  Feel free to call them as well.  They are looking into why my(our) speed on the M2 port is limited to 800 MPS.

The technician I spoke with was Paul Carlo from Dell.

I just pinged my Dell tech contacts about the M.2 slot...
