XPS 9000 and XPS 8000 delivery delay issues
The previous thread that mentioned issues of the Studio XPS 9000 and XPS 8000 being delayed or having extensive build times was locked. After a months time I had ordered mine (9/26) and it was supposed to ship on (10/22), after two delays it finally shipped out and will be received today (10/28). If you have any issues or have found any solutions to help get your systems sooner please help others that have also been in this predicament. It would seem the main issue is due to the high demand of I5 and I7 processors and parts being backordered. If you call customer service after a delay often times they will upgrade you to one day shipping, even though it took them three days to actually get it out.

Update:
In the nick of time, Dell has come through and shipped my computer. I was due to get another delay message in the morning, and was set to cancel; in fact I had already picked out a computer from another company that I was going to get instead, which was at least comparable to what I ordered here. That said, I'm happy to receive the Dell I configured.
So one day away from peril, my status has changed to shipped and I now have tracking numbers indicating that the packages (2) have been picked up by FedEx and are in transit. The only thing that slightly concerns me is that they claim to be 20lbs and 30lbs each, and thus neither seems heavy enough to be holding the Studio 9000 at its reported weight! But I think I'm just being a little paranoid there. With 3-5 day delivery I expect the goods to finally arrive on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Overall: two delays, it took four weeks to ship. This is a Studio 9000 Touch with 21.5" touchscreen monitor, single bluray read/write drive, ATI 5770, i7 920. Good luck to everybody who is still waiting. I won't be posting here again unless something goes wrong.

I have a minor issue with my XPS 420 and Dell can't get the part anymore. They are offering to replace my 420 with an XPS 9000. The 420 is a pretty solid chassis and design. Is the 9000 cheap by comparison? Is this a fair exchange, or should I just keep the 420 and deal with the minor issue? A few features that are on the 420 are not even offered on the 9000.

Update:
I noticed my 4th delay this morning. Decided not to call and be lied to again. Still not receiving notice from Dell when they do delay my order. Also still not hearing anything after filing complaint with the BBB. Will probably see if I can find something off the shelf at Best Buy that I can live with. I've never owned anything but a Dell, but at this point I don't even think I want the computer anymore, there is no component of Dell that I trust anymore.

Don't bother with the BBB, go right to the FTC.
Read this page first: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/business/adv/bus02.shtm

This is what I ordered. I think the delays were caused by Nvidia. They are offering 3 different cards now. Only offered the 240 gts when i ordered with several ATI variations.

I cannot claim that my experience is typical, but here's what happened:
I ordered my Studio XPS 9000 on February 5; with the original delivery date scheduled for March 4. I received notice that the system had been shipped on February 23, with an anticipated delivery date of February 26. There is some confusion regarding when the ticket was received at FedEx and when the system was shipped, but the system was delivered on Saturday, February 27, five days ahead of schedule.
The system is up and running (REALLY? DUH!), and I'm in love (yeah, right, with a computer; you need to get a life!). The system is quiet, large (but not as heavy as you'd think when you look at it), and appears to be solidly constructed. The 23" LCD is wonderful for these old eyes (I was using a 17" monitor I'd gotten with my original Dell Dimension 8100 back in 2001). Overall, my initial impressions are ... well, I'm impressed.
I've read the board on this issue for the past few weeks, and I know that some of you are having difficulties in getting your system. I've built, installed, and maintained computer systems for years, and there have been times I've pulled my hair out (hence the large, empty patch on the back of my head). I have to admit, though: for me, this system was worth waiting for! I hope that everyone gets the resolution they want out of this.

Hi
I ordered a Studio 15 (i5, but the rest of the components were straightforward) on 2/12. Delivery date has moved from 2/25 to 3/2 to 3/25.
At the same time Dell are currently offering a Studio 15 with i3 with 48 hour shipping.
Can't get anyone in Dell to explain the difference between the model shipping in 48 hours vs my order that is taking 6 weeks. Maybe it's the processor, maybe its something else, who knows - just met with massive indifference.
Regards
Rob

Just thought I would add another data point. I ordered an XPS 9000 on 2/4/2010 with an expected delivery of 3/4/2010. Fedex currently has my system with delivery expected 3/2/2010. Dell shows my system as shipped on 2/23/2010 but Fedex didn't actually pick it up until 2/25/2010. I'll include the configuration for reference, the only options selected were : processor, memory, video card, monitor, and mouse.

All the best to those of you who have received your computers and those still waiting. I gave up and cancelled this morning. Found a similar HP on sale at Staples that I plan on picking up tomorrow. Last time I'll ever try and purchase a Dell.

Remember that it has to clear customs. They probably did ship it from the factory but it had to pass through US customs before FedEx could pick it up.

Check the HP online forums for problems with the model you are considering. I need a desktop for a particular task set that does not involve games -- found a suitable HP model but was put off by the problems being reported for that model. Unless you are in a big organization and need delivery by the end of your fiscal year it is better if your vendor ships late than if they ship gear that doesn't work, but then large organization can make some serious trouble if those non-working systems aren't fixed. Lenovo is planning to introduce suitable machines this month, but I prefer to wait until there are some user reports before I purchase, so Dell wins if they deliver on sched.

Some poor guy trucked my system across the country over the weekend. It gets to my local fedex distribution center and now is going to sit there a couple days I guess.
From fedex tracking:
(I assume the 3 logs for local are delivery to facility, attempt to load for deliver, return to facility, too early to deliver for 3-5 day delivery.)

Just to give everyone some hope. My XPS 9000 was delivered today. Time from order to delivery was 26 days. This beat Dell delivery estimate by 2 days.
