XPS M1710 w/ Logitech z5500

would like to know whether or not the z5500 speakers are compatible with the onboard sound card that the M1710 provides or will i need to purchase a sound card to be used in the express card slot? thanks

That depends on what you mean by Compatible. If the z5500 accepts a normal audio line in and all you need/want is 2-channel stereo audio... you should be good.

However, I assume you are talking more along the lines fo 5.1 audio? In that case, based on what I can tell from the user manual, the M1710 only has a 2-channel output and would not support 5.1 channel. As such, you would need an external audio card to drive a 5.1 channel setup.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

That is correct.  I have the z5500's and the m1710.  I have an external sound card that does 5.1 before that all i got was stereo.

im actually from UK, so i cant purchase from those sites, altho it is considerably cheaper.....

from the dell US site the soundcard cost $65 but if i were to buy it in england it'd cost me $100.

anyone else reading this, would you happen to know where i can buy the ExpressCard Sound Blaster X-Fi Extreme Audio Notebook Sound Card from an uk/european site for the best price?

thank you

hi,

the soundcard which u recommend is a bit pricey because it does not include the docking module which i require to use with the analogue setup i have, so if i were to buy both it would cost me approx $150, are there any other suitable recommendations at maybe a lower price?

thanks

I am not aware of any... high quality sound for a laptop is still a very small niche market.
