It's kinda annoying. I'm wondering what happens if i remove some of the components, like removing the sound card or graphics card. Maybe that helps? I have no idea. I bought a Dell because i did not want to build my own system. I hope there will be a solution soon.
I called Dell but I need to sit behind my system. As this is during office hours I will do this probably next week. They expected to upgrade the BIOS and they want to check the limits of processor temperature in the BIOS. I tried to find this in the CMOS but could not found it. I don't have your sound card so I don't expect that to be the problem, nor the graphics card probably. To be continued.
Called the helpdesk yesterday, I had to run the diagnotics and the result of test was "pass". Then I needed to download "Speedfan". Temp 1 had a value of 127C!
So the computer will be picked up and repaired. They suspected that the heatsink must be replaced.
same here. also a 127C readout on temp 1. but that doesn't mean that the temperature is really that high it probably means that the program cannot find the sensor or maybe the sensor isn't connected. Strange nevertheless, because if the program can't find the sensor the fan probably isn't able to control the fan correctly either.
The core temperatures on my machine are somewhere betweeen 35 and 50 at max. That's quite normal with a stock cooler.
That said, i might give the helpdesk a call again too. Since i have the same symptoms. I'm just wondering if this 'repair' action will really solve the problem. Any word on the return time? are we talking about days or weeks here?
please don't tell me that i need to put my old PC back on the desk again :(
Probably you're right, the temperature can't be that high. Most likely is that wrong values starts up the cooler. Even in the BIOS the fan speeds up every 1 minute.
First they send a box, then you can set time and location for pickup . They expected a reapir time of 5-10 workingdays after the PC has been picked up by courier.
two weeks doesn't sound to bad. But i still have an awkward feeling. it's a brand new system, it should not need a repair. They must replace it straight away ;).
I guess things don't work like that. When did you receive your system? i got mine on the 26th of january. That's only 2 weeks ago, man... I'm probably in the same boat as you, I might as well boot up my old pc as we speak.
Today i called the Dell support again told them about the problems we still have with the processor fan. They told me that there are a lot of people with the same problem and that they are working on a solution which will probably be a bios upgrade.
I also referred to this thread on the community and they told me that it's not common at this moment to repair the heatsink and that every employee at the support desk should be aware of the situation, problem and possible solution. So my system will not be picked up for repair, they told me that i should keep an eye on the support website for an update.
That said: i'm very curious if the repair on your system will fix the problem so please keep us posted
The lower flap on the front is also not working properly and will be repaired too. I think that this would be an extra argument for repairing the machine. Of course I am very curious too if the repair will fix the problem of fan. Today I received the box so it would be a week of two when I can report. Keep you posted.
I got my 8100 last week and have the same problem with the processor fan revving up once a minute. Tech support sent a guy out to replace the fan. He just left after replacing the fan and confirming the problem is still there. I told him about this thread and the potential of a BIOS update coming. He called in and talked with support and told them about this thread and asked they confirm that a BIOS upgrade is in the works. He got no confirmation of the BIOS upgrade and support says they suspect a motherboard problem. They said I could go with replacing the motherboard or replacing the entire unit with a brand new one - my choice. I opted for the new unit. Sounds like it will be 2 - 4 weeks to get my new unit for the swap. I sure hope that fixes it and its not just another shot in the dark by support.
I knew it couldn't be the fan. I've checked it myself and it's ok, the fan just gets an instruction to rev up which it shouldn't get. Now what is causing this? a faulty sensor? probably not because it should be on top speed all of the time. so it must be something else. A colleague has the same system but without the problem. So changing the motherboard might be an idea, strange though that there are so many faulty motherboards... Only difference with his system is that he doesn't have the creative sound card. but that couldn't be the culprit right?
Support told me that it's a known problem and that there might be a bios update. not that there will be one. I'd should keep an eye on the site, to check for updates. Apparently they are still figuring out what the problem is.
In the mean time i'm checking the website and i hope that you will keep us posted, when you receive your new system. When the new system is there and doesn't have the problem then we can all call again and point to this thread :)
no complaints about the system itself, works like a charm...
I'm wondering does tech support checks threads like these?
I'm having exactly the same problems. I've contacted someone of Dell using email. But it takes me a lot of replying and waiting. "Happy" to see I'm not the only one... I've run the diagnostics and It's very clearly that it is the CPU fan. Hopefully we'll receive a Bios update or any other solution.
I've found an RSS feed with all software update. Hopefully they'll post the Bios update here shortly.

I have exact the same problem, also on a Dell Studio XPS 8100 with about the same specs.
Are there any solutions yet?

I just got my Studio XPS and have the exact same problem. Sounds like this one is pretty widespread. I'll be watching this thread closely for updates.

It's the Dutch RSS.
