XPS8100 processor fan problem
Hi.
Last week i received my XPS8100. The system works fine but there seems to be a problem with the processor fan. It revs up to around 3500rpm every minute for a very short time: only a second or two. After that it's back to normal and silent operation. It does this almost every minute. I've installed a tool to check the cores temperature and that reads around 35 to 50 degrees celcius depending on processor load. I think that is normal for a stock cooler right? I've opened the case to make sure it is the processor fan. I performed the dell diagnostics and there seems to be no problem with the system, even the specific fan test passed with no problems. It's strange because it's only revving up for a second or two.
It doesn't matter what the pc is doing. The problem occurs when the system is just turned on after an extensive cooling down (ie a night off). Also when the system is idle. It even occurs when i'm in the bios screen. So when the pc is turned on the problem is there.
I called dells XPS support and they could help me at this moment. They told me that i was not the only one called about this behaviour and that i should check the support section on a regular basis to check for updates. That's fine, but i'm wondering if i can investigate a little bit more. I have these specs:
XPS 8100
i7 860 @ 2.8ghz, 12GB ram, nvidia 240GT, soundblaster x-fi titanium soundcard, 1.5TB harddrives, window 7 pro 64bit, bios A03 (appears to be the last version)
any ideas or suggestions?
TIA
Raymond

I know this is off topic, but I posted another note related to the Studio XPS 8100. Can anyone confirm the DDR3 memory that is installed in their systems? The one I bought at Best Buy came with PC3-8500 (1066Mhz), but the DELL specs for this system call for the faster PC3-10600 (1333Mhz). I think I should call support to get the memory exchanged but maybe the specs are wrong? Thanks for any info!

It's just a matter of price which memory is installed. You can check your original configuration with your service-tag at Dell Support.
But since you bought it with the slower RAM, you paid less for the slower RAM.

Yesterday I received my repaired XPS 8100. Motherboard, CPU and heatsink were replaced. Fan makes slightly more noise but is certainly acceptable. Lower flap in front has not been repaired completely. Anyway main problem has been solved. So far so good.

My saga continues... I had Dell come out to replace my fan and heatsink last week. He put the new parts in and.... the problem got worse. Instead of the fan kicking into high gear every 60 seconds, the fan came on high speed and wouldn't shut down. I told him to put my old fan back in. He called back in to support and they recommended replacing the mother board. So he came back out this morning and put in a new mother board. No change. Still goes into high gear every 60 seconds. So he called back into support and they are sending out another new motherboard with new heatsink and fan. I am HOPING that this new combination of new motherboard, new heatsink and new fan will do the trick. If not, they'll be sending me a new system.

News at my case:
Dell sent me a replacement fan and heatsink. I replaced it myself and no the revving up is gone.
So replacement worked for me.
This happend once but as i still got the software-fan-control, I activated it and the fan went back going slow, then deactivated it and it never got locked at maximum speed again.

Guys,
I got this problem sorted out. The CPU fan on my xps 8100 was very loud too! Speedfan shows that the CPU temp can be as high as 90c with full load and the fan was running at 3500rpm.... I called DELL and they send me a replacement motherboard/heatsink/fan. The replacement mobo and heatsink is slightly different from the one I have. In my box, the heatsink is "plasticly clipped" to the motherboard and that causes the entire heatsink assembly to rock and even come loose. On the replacement part they send to me, there is a bracket on the backside of the mobo, and the heatsink assembly is attached with metal screws (which is a much better way IMO). So I replaced the whole thing - motherboard, heatsink and fan. Now the system is very quiet and the CPU temp is 45c even at full load (20c at zero load.)

This problem started cropping up for me about two weeks ago as well. Also downloaded SpeedFan (after finding this thread) and my Temp 1 is also 127C. So what was the fix offered by Dell? fan replacement? I've got a 3-year On-Site Warranty

I put my Studio XPS 8100 in my computer graveyard for the same reason and bought a ASUS computer with better specs for less money and swore to never buy a Dell again. Good luck with the Dell computers guys.

In effect they say "Haha, we have your money. Why should we worry about it"? I know this judging from the number of people effected and how long this has been going on.
