Get rid of ZA5 until they fix the bugs with it - it's a mess.

Use 4.5 for now - if you read the ZoneLabs forums, more people are having trouble with 5 than not.

I'm not having problems with the new update except for the fact that ZA now wants to monitor your Anti -Virus. I like to update Norton manually so ZA keeps giving me an alert that automatic updating is switched off. You can configue ZA to not monitor the anti-virus program so i suppose it's not a big deal. This is in regard to the free version.

Hi,

The previous version of Zone Alarm is here

http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/1023_zl/zlsSetup_45_594_000.exe

or here

http://www.ntu.edu.sg/cits2/software/download/zlsSetup_45_594_000.exe

Nothing else needs to be said, except to speculate what will be done to the person or people who were responsible for releasing this program upgrade.  It has caused as much of a problem as any "decent" virus.

I know what I'd like to do to whoever was responsible

The problem is mainly affecting XP users.

I have however read reports of problems with 98, ME, XP pro & home, 2000 & 2003

I would not recommend anyone upgrading to or installing any version of ZA 5 until Zone Labs test it properly.

I downloaded the latest freeware version this morning for use with my Windows 98SE system along with I.E. 6 and my DSL connection.  So far no problems although I have the new anti-virus monitoring shut off as well as the automatic check for updates feature disable.  I also make a point of blocking Zone Alarm and the Zone Labs client  programs in the Program Control.  After reading this thread I made a side trip to Steve Gibson's Shields Up web site and it passed all the tests with flying colors.

Thanks for all the information, expecially to Ceri for the links to the version 4.5 download. I have to drive back home 250 miles today, and I hated to leave my brother without a firewall.

Where is the ZoneAlarm forum that was mentioned? I'd like to keep track of possible fixes there.

Majestic...I have to agree with your configuration. I'm at the same place and so far, so good. It's true the ZA Forum is loaded with complaints.

I'm back home and just got my first "there's something wrong with your anti-virus software -- buy ours" message from the ZoneAlarm update on my old Windows 98SE machine. I guess there aren't any other good free firewalls. NIS 2004 is too bloated, even though I own it. Does anyone know anything about the Trend Micro firewall/antivirus suite? I've seen good reviews.

If you're referring to PC Cillin Internet Security 2004, yes, it's a very solid, reliable package.

Yes, that's the one. How easy is it to update virus definitions, etc.? Ease of updates is one thing that Symantec has and McAfee doesn't (at least not the last time I used a McAfee product).
