Hi austinwiz999,
Why do you think the error pertains to your external hard drive?
Also, please provide the model of your Dell and operating system.

Because when I viewed the error in Event Viewer it said Hard disk 2. I checked Disk Management and Disk 2 is my external Hard Drive.

For what it's worth, I regularly get exactly the same "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk#\DR#* " for all 3 of my Seagate USB drives, previously using XP and now using Win 7:
I think it happens when these drives turn themselves off after whatever time period is set in the SeaTools utilities (different Seagate drives call the utilities by different names). If the OS calls for one of these drives after it turned off, there's a bit of a lag before it spins up to speed, and it may time out with that error message as a result, but it will still read/write properly.
Right after purchasing the first drive (80GB), I contacted Seagate about the error message but they had no clue, telling me to reinstall Windows. Aside from that error message, they all work perfectly so I ignore it.
*The number varies with whichever drive caused the error.
