defragmentation and free space...need help please!!
My free space is down to 19.......is it normal for system not to be able to defragment document files? I know very little about computers. I have a dimension 4550 and I remember getting black screens with white letters saying there was problem with ntfs disc or file and for me to wait while a check was being done. This happened 3 or 4 times and it was after these instances that I noticed my system very noticeably slowing. I can defragment and reboot and go back to analyze system and it will say it needs defragmenting immediately after having done so. Does anyone know what my problem might be? Thanks and God Bless, Mary

free space is doown to 19 what is that percent or gigs or something else? How large is your hard drive 19 gigs on a 160 gig HD clearly is different than 19 gigs on a 40 gig hard drive. If your hard drive is over half full it will begin to slow if you have only 19% free space I would guess that it has gotten extreemely slow and that this might be creating issues with how well the defrag will or will not work.
If you have added a ton of information and/or not defragged in a long time it may take multiple defrags to actually get it corrected.

I printed the report for last defragmentation.
It read.. Volume size 55.84 GB, cluster size 4KB, used space 44.73 GB and free space 11.11 GB and percent of free space 19%.
Volume fragmentation reads Total Fragmentation 31%, File fragmentation 60%, and free space fragmentation 3%
File fragmentation reads Total files 77, 363, average file size 823 kb, total fragmented files 281, Total excess fragments 286,812, average fragments per file 4.70
Pagefile fragmentation ... pagefile size 384 mb, total fragments 907
Folder fragmentation....Total folders 4,766 and fragmented folders 1 excess folder fragments=0
Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation ....Total MFT size 90MB, MFT record count 84,191, percent MFT in use 91% and Total MFT fragments =5
Files that cannot be fragmented are all document and settings/ my documents and are listed below
fragments File size
5,023 377 MB
5,257 420 MB
4,438 484 MB
7,967 520 MB

By the way.....my system will defragment in just minutes and upon rebooting I will analyze and it says need defragmenting. I have repeated the process as many as 6 times with the same results.
Thanks, Mary

if you know how to, boot into safe mode and do the defrag there (not analyze)
edit: you may also want to check the disk for errors as well

I got in safe mode and started defrag. at 12:49 am and it took less than 1 min. to analyze and started defrag at 12:50 am ....at 12:51 it hit 3% and then 5% ........at 12"52 it hit 14% ........at 12:53 it hit 15% and just completed instantly and said defragmentation complete
I tried once more at 12:54 defrag was at 1%, 3%,5% and suddenly said defrag complete in less than 2 mins.
For whatever reason it seems unable to complete defragmentation. If you have any further ideas I would be happy to try them.
Thanks again and God Bless, Mary

If it were me, I'd probably do a full system scan for virus and other malware. Once I knew the system was clean, I'd defrag with O&O defrag V8.0 Professional Edition. This defrag is much better than the Windows defrag and, unlike Windows, will do an off-line defrag of your page file and MFT reserve files. The defrag has a 30 day free trial http://www.oo-software.com/en/download/
Hope this helps you.

you can schedule a defrag while you are away from your computer.
"fragmentation was over 60%."
Wow you are lucky your computer could function at all at that level.
Defrag early and often.

Thanks for the response. I had my computer set to defrag automatically once a week plus I was also doing it myself and using disc cleanup and rebooting at least once daily to keep it running. I didnt realize that it was only defragmenting a small % and then kicking out saying defrag was complete until I watched it so closely earlier when trying the responses from the forum. I think Dell and windows need a better defragmenter in their systems. I even went to dell and had a system check there and all was well they said. I know so little about computers that I didnt know there were different ones out there....lol. My defragmenter doesnt give % needing defragmention....just the files that couldnt be defragmented. I was amazed when the new defragmenter I downloaded said more than 60%.
Thanks again and I'll remember the 5% rule!!!!

Hey Bobby,
I wanted to let you know I'm down to 3.04% fragmentation and up to 62% on my free space after running the O&O Defragmenter twice. I'm hoping to see a big difference in my system now. Can't thank you enough. I will definitely use the forum for any future problems since everyone that responded made things so simple for me to understand. I was terrified when I made my posting that I would never understand what any of you guys were talking about if you did respond. Heck, I wasnt even sure I was posting correctly.....LOL.
I hope you and yours have a wonderful Easter Holiday.
You guys are all the greatest and I mean that sincerely.
Mary
