dell inspiron 660 Windows 8 - USB not recognized

Hi All,

My Inspiron 660 loaded with Windows 8 is about 3 months old and recently I keep getting prompts of 'USB device not recognized', those external hard disk that works suddenly gets booted out from file explorer and while other usb thumb drives can seize working halfway and then the usual 'USB device not recognized' pops out.

Appreciate advise or help as there wasn't any problem in the past.

Thank you.

Hi Patrick,

I would suggest you to reinstall the BIOS and Chipset drivers on the system using the links below to check if it fixes the issue.

BIOS                    : http://dell.to/18qNs7w

Chipset 1             : http://dell.to/15usXVn

Chipset 2             : http://dell.to/1aq8nst

Chipset 3             : http://dell.to/172isMy

Please let me know if this helps.

Hi there, thanks for the reply. Went through all the links, downloaded and reinstall, it was good in the afternoon but later the same night, the same message of USB not recognized prompt again.

Hi Patrick,

Please follow the steps below to run the test on USB ports on the system.

1.       Open the link http://dell.to/14YjKb2

2.       Select ‘Hardware’ under ‘Choose a Diagnostic Type’.

3.       Select ‘USB’.

4.       Click on ‘Run Diagnostics’ button.

5.       Let me know if the results.

You might try updating your chipset drivers with the latest versions straight from Intel's download site. There is an automated chipset identification utility there for that purpose.
