dimension 5100 upgrades
i have a dell dimension 5100 for a few years now and really like the unit. i have ugraded to windows 7 ultimate 64-bit and it runs good. i had read on the net that if you were running win 7 64-bit you can upgrade your ram memory. right now i have 3.50 GB on my system and just bought 2 2 GB stcks to add to my pc to bring up the ram to 6 GB...well i tried to install the 6 GB but my pc wont boot up. put the old memeory back in booted right up. put just the 2 2GB stcks in and it booted up but says 4.00 GB (3.25 usable) changed back to my old ram and it reads (3.50GB 3.25 usable) so i realized that my pc isnt using anything past 3.25 GB ..AM I DOING SOMETHING WRONG ? IS THERE A SOFTWARE UPGRADE I CAN DO SO THE PC WILL READ MORE MEMORY OR IS IT THAT MY PC JUST CAN HANDLE MORE EVEN WITH THE 64-BIT UPGRADE ?
DELL DIMESION 5100
INTEL PENTIUM 4 CPU 3.00GHZ
RAM 3.50GB (3.25 USABLE)
O/S WINDOWS 7 ULTIMATE 64-BIT

The hardware limit is 4GB on this model. Nothing you can do to install or use more.
But, even with 64 bit OS, it will use all of the memory but useable can be something less than the full 4GB due to uses by system hardware such as video. What you are seeing is normal.

Saw your post and I have a related question. I also have the Dimension 5100, currently with 1GB of memory and want to upgrade to 4GB. Do you know how I can tell what memory to buy? When I log into the Dell site and search for parts for my computer, it gives me all sort of memory modules for all different kinds of dell desktops and laptops, but not the 5100. So what should I look for?

Go to www.crucial.com and check out the memory there. That is what most of the techies on here recommend for non-Dell memory as it's guaranteed to work in Dell's. The Crucial site will also tell you what memory is compatible if you want to buy it from Dell.
