I would do a complete scan for viruses. This is one way of knowing you have the kak.htm worm virus.

Make sure your virus definations files are up to date. Depending on which virus program you have you can find info on their site. Here is a site where you can ckeck http://www.getvirushelp.com/main.ssi

I have done a complete virus scan using McAffee and Norton. Nothing showed up. I have had the kak worm several times and installed the patch. It is not present in any of my files.
This does not seem to be the problem. It does not seem to interfere with any of my programs but just that it is there bothers me. Any other sugestions?

have you by chance unchecked anything in msconfig? I noticed that when i accidentally unchecked my whole config.sys, the only thing that happened was I got an error message stating the following:

no memory managers installed

make sure that you are loading everything in your config.sys file.

click start/run/msconfig

If you have the sound blaster live card, this just adds to my suggestion. I personally would uninstall the sound card and drivers and reinstall them. But first just simply check to see if anything is unchecked from config.sys.

Thanks for replying. I checked my msconfig as you suggested and this is what I found:

in the General tab, Selective Start up is checked. All items are checked except Process Winstart.bat file which is uncheckable.

In the Start up tab everything is checked EXCEPT the following:
task monitor
Disknag
LoadPowerProfile (there are 2 of these, both unchecked)
Scheduling gent
Encompass_ENCMONTR
Zip disk icons
Find now
Iomega startup option
run=(there are 2 of these also, only one is unchecked.)

I have no idea what a lot of this is. Am a bit curious about Disk nag. Husbands need to be nagged to get things done, but a computer???

Oh, and the sound card is a Yamaha.

By the way, when the error comes up it is posted as a minimized tab on the top of the screen. Any way I could get it enlarged to see if it says anything else? All that is viewable is the words driver memory error. Would like to know what driver...

Thanks again,
Andrea

right click my computer/properties/device manager

are there any errors or conflicts in here? If so, what to?

Oh, about your startup tab. What you have unchecked is good. Though, if you are using win98SE, unchecking the loadpowerprofile (both of them) will sometimes cause you to have ghost aplications in the taskbar after your screen saver comes on. If you are experiencing this, its becuase thoughs powerprofiles are unchecked. I dont konw why though.

what exactly do you do before you get the error? Are you starting windows? restarting? shutting down? online? doing normal applications like word or excel?

keep me informed

Andrew.

I checked the device manager and do not see any problems in that area.

Should I check one of the LoadPowerProfiles?

The error comes up after I start the machine, after I type in the password but before the desktop is loaded. It stays on for about 4 to 5 seconds then dissappears. It does not show up again until after being shut down and booting up again.

It baffles me that it does not seem to interfere with any of the CD Rom games that my children use or any other areas of use. Im basically just curious to know if it is a video, sound or whatever kind of driver it may be...
