i just purchased two 256 memory sticks for my dimension 8100 with winME.
it recommends a flash bios update. ive read the instructions and it has enough warning s to scare me. one question i cant find an answer too. when do you do the bios update? before i install the memory? or after i install the memory?

You really don't need to do a BIOS update to upgrade the memory in the 8100, but still it would be useful to know which version of the BIOS you currently have so that someone could advise you on whether or not you need an upgrade for other things.

Because it is so old, I would recommend upgrading to version A09, if you are running Windows ME, or version XP2, if you are running Windows XP.  To do this, Go  to the download site and download the verison of the BIOS upgrade package with a filename that starts with the letter "B". Run the program from your hard drive and it will prompt you to insert a formatted blank floppy disk in the a: drive. It will then create a DOS bootable floppy with the BIOS upgrade program on it. Make sure that your BIOS is set to boot from the floppy drive first, and reboot your computer with newly created disk in the a: drive. It will then prompt you to flash the BIOS to the new version. Be sure that there is no possibility of a power interruption during this upgrade process.

Again, for the memory upgrade you don't need to upgrade the BIOS, so it doesn't matter if you do it before or after installing the memory.

With Windows ME you will need to remove the other two sticks of memory. Windows ME can not run over 512 MG of RAM. Your system will crash and constanly run with memory errors. If you want more than 512 of RAM you will need to upgrade your operating system to 2000 or XP.

There are some workarounds, but not worth the trouble.
