See the guide below for reinstalling XP you will need the system drivers and need to install them in the recommended order.

I recommend not using the "Dell Download Manager".

Obtaining Service Packs/The Latest Build of Internet Explorer

• Windows XP Standalone Service Pack 2

• Windows XP Standalone Service Pack 3

• Internet Explorer 8

• Windows Media Player 11

Note you will not need to download the Service Packs if you have them on the disc. Save the files to an external hard drive.

Downloading the Dell Drivers

Dell System Drivers may be found on the Dell Drivers and Downloads page.

Select Drivers and Downloads

Input your service tag. This is a 7 digit code found at the base of your laptop (alternatively you can select your product model but generally there are variants in components and so using the service tag makes it more system specific).

Switch the yellow to Windows XP (32 bit) if it isn't already selected by default.

When downloading the drivers, I recommend downloading via internet browser as many users have experienced problems with the Dell Driver Download Manager.

Download and save it using the same folder structure as me to prevent confusion and to ensure that you install all the drivers in the correct order. Save on an external hard drive or USB stick. Although this guide is based on installing/reinstalling Windows XP on laptops, installation on Dell desktops will be very similar.

• 1. Dell System (Notebook/Desktop) Software - Under System Utilities

• 2. Chipset Drivers (Intel then Ricoh/Realtek/Any other ones) - Under Chipset

• 3. Video Driver (Looking only for Intel/ATI/nVidea ones applicable) - Under Video

• 4. Conexant Drivers - Under Communications (not here therefore not applicable in this example)

• 5. Network Ethernet Driver (Usually mentions Ethernet/Broadcom) - Under Network

• 6. Wireless Card - Under Network

• 7. Touchpad - Under Mouse & Keyboard

• 8. Audio (any drivers before applications) - Under Audio

• 9. Intel Matrix Storage Manager (If applicable) - Under SATA Drives  (Usually only bother with Intel  Matrix Storage Manager)

• 10. TV Tuners/Other Video (If applicable) - Under Video

• 11. Bluetooth (If applicable) - Under Network

• 12. Dell Quickset (laptops only) - Under Applications

◘ Note the other drivers such as the BIOs, CD/DVD firmware can be updated if you wish but I would recommend leaving these alone. Sometimes if these updates go wrong, things seriously break. If you have no problems with any of these devices then leave them be. You may look through Applications to see if you find anything else useful. I however recommend downloading

• 13. Dell Support Centre (from here, not from applications)

• 14. Dell Webcam Software* (if you have an integrated webcam)

• 15. My Dell Downloads (requires 32 bit IE, gives you a download link to some of the preinstalled software on your system).

* Note for some systems there is a Webcam Driver found Under Mouse & Keyboards. This should be installed before the Dell Webcam Software. Skype should also be installed before the Dell Webcam Software. Skype version 4.2 (pre-adverts) may be downloaded from Dell R272748 or the latest version can of course be found on the Skype Website.
