installing a program from Windows 3.1

I want to install a program on my new computer that I had on my old one, which had windows 3.1 I can copy that file fine on a floppy. My question is about installing that on my new Dell. Will my add/remove programs do all the work for me?? Will I still have my old icon??What do I need to know about this installation so I don't screw something up??Do I need to disable anti-virus protection to do this??
Thanks much, I'm new at this!!!

Packer, you will need the original instalation disks and you will also need to check with the company that wrote the program to see if it will run under Windows 98.

Packer,

If the Disks have an install on them, go to the Dos Prompt and install from the A: drive. If they do not have an install file, make a directory at the dos c:\ prompt called Choice. Then copy all the files from each disk to that directory.

I know First Choice will work. I just helped a friend get her First Choice Program on her computer. In her case we had to copy all the files to the Choice directory. Then we put a shortcut of the program command which is First.exe on the desktop. Many older programs like this do run in Windows 98 just fine.

Hope this helps Joan

Joan,
Thanks for all your help!! I don't know if the desks have install on them or not. I was just going to copy the .exe files from the old computer onto a floppy.
I don't have the original install discs.I really need step by step help I'm afraid. How do I create a new directory at the dos c:\prompt?? How do I get that prompt?? Will this be more of a hassle than it's worth??? Thanks again!! Packer

Packer,

You will need all the files in the directory of your old computer. It can be tedious but not impossible. Just coping the .exe files won't do it though. Hang on and let me check with my friend as to how many files and bytes are in her directory. I will get back to you.

Oh, I can show you how to get to dos.....make directory and copy files.
