invalid boot diskette

First, im glad this forum is here. Ive read a lot and have gotten great information.

I getting this error, seems common on the dimensions and behaves the same as the otherr....will boot if it is "restarted" but cant boot up cold without getting this error.

the day before i started getting this error message, i was trying unsuccessfully to install an SATA PCI adapter. I had tried all day Saturday and could not get the PC to recognize my new SATA drive, though it would recognize the card itself. I gave up, removed the card and the drive, drivers etc... The next day, i get the error message.

I have done

new power supply
NVRAM reset
BIos update
adware spyware virus scan
scandisk and defrag
Bios reset defaults
Bios reset the boot configuration
new mobo battery
plugged and unplugged every cable i could get my hands on
reseated memory

no positive results. I am running some tests on my harddrive from WD to see if its a failing hard drive. Anything else i can try guys??

It could be the MBR gone bad , or else You may have a Floppy disk or cd rom inserted in to the Floppy drive or Cd rom Drive respectively , Make sure no Bootable media is inserted while you turn on the computer ,

If you do not have any Media Inserted , Then should be the Operating system(Provided hdd test passed) , Try a debug and reinstall windows

Steps that you have to follow :
1.Insert Dell dimension Resource disc
2.Shut down the computer
3.Turn it BAck on and Keep tapping F8
4.Should have an Option "boot from CD rom "
5.Choose an Option that has CDROM specified and hit Enter
6.It should Boot through the resource Disc
7.Should have couple of Options again
8.Now look for Open a DOS Session
9.By default you would receive few message in the end it should be something like D:\csd>
In that prompt you need to type in "C:" and hit enter
STEPS THAT YOU HAVE TO TYPE AND HIT" ENTER "AFTER EVERY LINE
C:
debug
F 200 L1000 0
A CS:100
MOV AX,301
MOV BX,200
MOV CX,1
MOV DX,80
INT 13
INT 20
Leave this line blank
G
Should receive a message" program terminated normally "
Restart the computer after replacing the Disc with WIndows XP

im not familiar with DOS at all, or the commands listed.  What does this list of commands do that corrects the startup problem?

Thanks

If it's not a Hard drive/hardware  problem it would just wipe it Clean , And then reinstall the operating system .

Note: make sure you follow the steps accordingly .

Thanks Dave

Whats the purpose of the "debugging"?  I have formatted hard drives clean and reinstalled OS's in the past.  Do the steps you outlined bring different results?
