invalid boot diskette

Please Help!! My friend has a dell demension L500r. When she turned her computer on her screen was black with a message on it which read "invalid boot diskette". Does anyone know what this means?? Thank You, Kandy


P.S. She didn't leave a disk in it either. It wont do anything!! Thanks again.

This message means that one or more of the system files have been inappropriately handled, could be user mishandling or system corruption during a software installation or uninstallation the latter is the most likely.
What OS is themachine running (my assumption is win95 or me), the best option in such a circumstance is to boot to safe mode with command prompt and copy your files to a disk or if you dont mind losing the data on the computer (seldom) go ahead and do a clean install.
Let me know what the last activity was before the system went down like this.

the last she used the computer was a week and a half ago, she read her mail and played a game. she is running os windows 98.thank you --Kandy

In addition to Anand's suggestion,that error can also mean that the hard drive has failed and/or she may have a floppy disk in the A: drive. If the A: drive is not the issue, then look in the System setup (BIOS) and see if the hard drive is recognized.
