Boot the PC and press F2 before XP starts to load to run BIOS setup. Look for a USB option saying something like "USB-No Boot" and enable that choice. Otherwise the PC may be trying to boot from new keyboard -which it obviously can't- and it stalls. While you're in BIOS, see if the PS/2 port is just turned off and that's why you think it failed.
If you can't get PC to accept F2 to start BIOS setup, try connecting keyboard to each USB port on rear of the tower. Typically, only one USB port is active until XP loads and that's where keyboard should be connected.
