no boot device detected - xp

When we try to start our Dimension 2350 (purchased 4/03, running Windows XP), we get the following message:

PXE-M0F: Exiting Broadcom PXE ROM
No boot device detected. Insert system disk and press F1 to continue or press F2 for setup menu.

The closest thing I could find to a system disk was the Windows XP Operating System Reinstallation disk.

What can we do to get up and running again?

Go into setup (F2). Is the hard drive seen by the BIOS? If it is not, reseat the data and power cables to it. If it still is not seen, it has failed. Replace it, and use the Windows CD to reinstall the OS on the new drive, patch it fully, install antivirus/firewall software, and then reinstall your applications, and finally restore your data from your backups.

but if the HDD is detected, clear the NVRAM and restore defaults. the reason why your getting this

PXE-M0F: Exiting Broadcom PXE ROM
No boot device detected. Insert system disk and press F1 to continue or press F2 for setup menu

is that your system setup my have been reconfigured.

Thanks for the replies. It's looking like the hard drive is gone. I'm having some 'experts' look at it, but I'm pretty worried. Unforunately, much has not been backed up, so it looks like a pretty big loss. I'm hearing the Dimension 2350 has a reputation for this?

The system doesn't have anything to do with it. Any hard drive can fail, without warning, at any time. There are some drive models that are less reliable than others, just as you'll find car models that are less reliable.

Bottom line: Your data, on a single hard drive, is not safe. You MUST make routine backups, or you can lose everything.

If you need the data back but can't see the drive, you may want to contact Ontrack, DriveSavers, etc. - date recovery outfits. Be prepared for the cost though - it can run into the thousands of dollars, depending on the amount of work needed and on the amount of data involved.

I recently started getting the same error message. But once I started the machine I heard clicking so I immediately went out, and got a new hard drive. Reinstalled os, restarted it, it worked fine. I installed the drivers, and the error came back.
