pci.sys corrupt

We've got a dell dimension 4600. The device manager is showing a yellow question mark for "pci device". I tried downloading the drivers for the chipset and installing but it didn't change the problem.

Help appreciated.

Don't know how this happened, but today after turning on the computer, all yellow question marks were gone and the sound blaster card was detected.

Thanks for the help.

Hi cisz,

It seems that the drivers for the modem is missing. Click Here -> type the service tag of the computer -> choose the operating system -> Expand Modem/Communications. If only one driver is listed, download and install it.

If you see multiple drivers listed, you may provide the hardware ID so that I can look for a compatible driver (if available). Please go to Device Manager -> right click on PCI Devices -> choose Properties -> Details -> from the drop-down under properties, choose Hardware ID; will take it further.

We also get the message sometimes that the pci.sys file is corrupt.

We're running windows xp pro.

That should have been PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_7004&CC098000

Hello,

There were several drivers at dell. There were also several listings under "hardware ids". These are the ids:

PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_7004&SUBSYS_10031102&REV_00

PCI]VEN_1002&DEV_704&CC_098000

The other 2 were shortened versions of these 2.

Thanks.

PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_7004

Vendor Id 0x1002

Vendor Name ATI Technologies Inc. / Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.

0x7004    CPU to PCI Bridge

AKA AMD Chipset Drivers.

AMD Chipset Drivers

Those Device ID's would NOT be in a dimension 4600 unless there was an ATI AGP card with PCI to PCI bridge.

AMD has AGP hotfix drivers for this. The standard and newest Drivers DO NOT WORK with AGP systems.

AMD Catalyst™ 12.6 Driver Download for AMD Radeon™ AGP ...

With one of the following graphics products installed in the system:

  • AMD Radeon™ HD 4xxx series of AGP graphics products
  • AMD Radeon™  HD 3xxx series of AGP graphics products
  • AMD Radeon™  HD 2xxx series of AGP graphics products

Also, astra 32 lists ATI  technologies as the manufacturer and there is an ATI media center program on the computer. which I was able to run but it didn't seem to list the model of the graphics card.

The installation how to at amd says that microsoft .net framework is needed for the card but doesn't list which version. I assume the latest one is ok?

Astra 32 reports quite a few pci to agp devices. It lists a radeon 9200

You have to install DOT NET starting with 1.1 then 2.0 then 3.5 then 4.0 in that order.:emotion-3:

A radeon 9200 would not have the PCI to AGP Bridge.

I installed the .net framework files and now the ati graphic card is functioning. It even brought up the "found new device" window for the "pci input device" when installing but it didn't clear the yellow question mark.

I noticed that one of the pci devices listed by astra 32 was Intel 82865G PE P DRAM Controller". There had been some memory problems at one point where the memory was being detected and then not detected. I uninstalled the memory sticks and then reinstalled them one at a time but I'm wondering if a driver for the dram controller is where the problem is. Would you know where to get the drivers for this?

Thanks.

Most recent development:

The device manager also had a yellow question mark for multimedia audio controller. I tried installing the audio driver from dell (for the sound blaster live 5.1 card). That solved the problem with the "pci device" yellow question mark but the audio controller still has it. The device manager/sound lists soundblaster live as the sound card.
