pentium 4 socket compatibilty
i have a dell optiplex gx260, 2.40 gh 845 G/GL video im pretty sure the socket is not 775 which is needed for a 64 bit os. my question is will a 775 socket fit/function the processor or is the processor designed specifically for its socket?

If you want to replace the default OptiPlex GX 260 Socket 478 motherboard, with a LGA 775 unit, you would also need to replace the IDE hard drives, probably the IDE optical dives, the newer systems support SATA drives, RAM, the AGP video card, [LGA 775 MoBo's support either PCIe x16, or PCI cards], power supply and possibly the operating system, as Dell's OEM copies are factory installed and tied to the original motherboard BIOS.

It would cost more to upgrade the GX260, than buy a used OptiPlex system that supports LGA775 processors.

No, the OptiPlex GX260 supports only Socket 478 processors, a LGA 775 processors require a Socket LGA 775.
